{"id":33163,"date":"2021-03-16T16:32:37","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T16:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/native\/uncategorized\/the-data-forge\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:40:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:40:05","slug":"the-data-forge","status":"publish","type":"native","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/native\/raytheon_intelligence_space\/the-data-forge\/","title":{"rendered":"The Data Forge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"color:#000000; font-size: 1em; font-style: italic;\">Raytheon has developed a prototype system for managing the floods of satellite data that help generate warnings and intelligence information for combatants and eventually, civilian first responders and researchers.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>This system is meant to unlock the full potential of satellite data<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. government\u2019s global satellite network produces a constant flood of data \u2014 petabytes and petabytes of it every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. has more than 350 satellites in space right now, doing everything from monitoring weather patterns, providing GPS signals, collecting intelligence and relaying communications. That doesn\u2019t even include the hundreds of commercial satellites operated by U.S. companies,\u201d said Ted Glusko, vice president for C2, Space and Intelligence at Raytheon. \u201cWe need to make sure we\u2019re able to make use of all the information those satellites are collecting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon is working with the U.S. Air Force on a prototype system to manage the massive amounts of satellite data, developed as part of a $197 million contract to upgrade the service\u2019s missile-warning architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Future Operationally Resilient Ground Evolution Mission Data Processing Application Framework \u2014 FORGE MDPAF for short \u2014 will process Overhead Persistent Infrared satellite data from both the U.S. Air Force\u2019s evolving Space Based Infrared System constellation and the future <a href=\"https:\/\/ad.doubleclick.net\/ddm\/trackclk\/N7384.126776.DEFENSENEWS\/B23937312.269859563;dc_trk_aid=464739332;dc_trk_cid=130279619;dc_lat=;dc_rdid=;tag_for_child_directed_treatment=;tfua=\">Next Gen OPIR<\/a> constellation, as well as be capable of processing data from other civil and environmental sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal: generate warnings, awareness and intelligence information for combatants and eventually, civilian first responders and researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFORGE will open up access to data,\u201d said Karen Casey, a Raytheon engineering fellow leading the system\u2019s development. \u201cFor missile-warning information, we\u2019ll have a platform available for every security level. But we\u2019ll also have apps for fire detection, early warnings of volcanic activity, agricultural changes and electric power consumption, to name a few.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different applications will allow FORGE, an advanced, data-processing framework, to process specific types of data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe FORGE platform operates much like a smartphone; it doesn\u2019t do a lot without all the apps,\u201d said Jabari Loving, a Raytheon FORGE systems engineer. \u201cSince FORGE will be a Department of Defense-owned system, all applications will be highly vetted using the DoD\u2019s most stringent cybersecurity certification standards. Raytheon, in turn, will provide the framework.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon\u2019s FORGE technology has been tested with data from SBIRS, the company&#8217;s satellite-based Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite and ground radar. It\u2019s also been built to the latest cyber and information security standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary mission of the framework will be to issue missile warnings to the Pentagon and National Command Authority. But the system has obvious civilian applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOPIR is a very advanced heat-signature detector,\u201d Loving said. \u201cIf FORGE was hosting a first-responder application, it could actually see things like forest fires just as they start.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FORGE is being developed using a DevOps pipeline process to write and install new applications as new missions are added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closet comparison to the FORGE framework is Global Positioning System, which started out as a military system, but is now a critical service much of the world relies on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFORGE could really play the same kind of role,\u201d said Glusko. \u201cGPS is something all of us pretty much use every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a
