{"id":13932,"date":"2022-08-17T19:32:07","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T19:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/08\/17\/us-air-force-grounds-osprey-fleet-after-dangerous-clutch-problem\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:00:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:00:42","slug":"us-air-force-grounds-osprey-fleet-after-dangerous-clutch-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2022\/08\/17\/us-air-force-grounds-osprey-fleet-after-dangerous-clutch-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"US Air Force grounds Osprey fleet after dangerous clutch problem"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 A problem with the clutch on Air Force Special Operations Command\u2019s CV-22 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2016\/12\/19\/osprey-operations-resume-in-japan-after-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\">Osprey aircraft<\/a> has prompted the command to ground its fleet while it tries to find the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an email to Defense News, AFSOC public affairs director Lt. Col. Becky Heyse said that the command\u2019s 52 tiltrotor Ospreys were grounded on Tuesday due to recent \u201chard clutch engagement\u201d incidents. Two such problems have happened in the last six weeks, and there were previously two others that occurred since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFSOC Commander Lt. Gen. Jim Slife ordered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/08\/05\/heres-what-we-know-about-f-35-ejection-seat-woes-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\">stand-down<\/a> to ensure airmen\u2019s safety, Heyse said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one was injured as a result of the four clutch problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe absolutely owe the air crew information about why this is happening and how we\u2019re going to mitigate it,\u201d Heyse said. \u201cBecause we don\u2019t have that now, Gen. Slife didn\u2019t feel comfortable flying them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stand-down and clutch problem was <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2022\/08\/exclusive-air-force-special-operations-command-grounds-cv-22-ospreys-due-to-safety-issue\/\" target=\"_blank\">first reported by Breaking Defense<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hard clutch engagement occurs when the clutch connecting the propeller\u2019s rotor gear box to its engine slips. When this happens, Ospreys are designed to transfer the power load from that engine to the other engine immediately, which would allow it to keep operating if an engine failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In these incidents, the clutch on the original gear box has engaged and the power load transferred back, within a span of milliseconds. The large transfer of torque causes the Osprey to lurch, and the air crews land immediately. These problems in the past have led to the replacement of Ospreys\u2019 gear boxes and engines, which qualified them as Class A mishaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heyse said AFSOC is not sure whether it is a mechanical, design or software problem causing these hard clutch engagements, and as a result can\u2019t put solutions in place to stop it from happening again until the command knows more. It is not yet known how long the Ospreys will be grounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AFSOC staff will work with the V-22 Joint Program Office and industry partners \u2014 the CV-22 is made by Bell Boeing, and its engines are built by Rolls-Royce \u2014 to study the data, figure out what is causing it and develop ways \u201cto mitigate the likelihood of catastrophic outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nine Marines have died in two of that service\u2019s MV-22B Osprey crashes earlier this year. A crash in Norway in March killed four Marines, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/2022\/08\/14\/pilot-error-the-cause-of-norway-osprey-crash-that-killed-4-marines\/\" target=\"_blank\">investigators concluded pilot error<\/a> was the primary cause. In June, five Marines died in another MV-22B Osprey crash, this one in California. Those two crashes, as well as four other Class A mishaps this year, prompted the Marine Corps to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/06\/15\/marine-corps-orders-safety-standdown-for-all-aviation-units-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">order a one-day safety standdown<\/a> for aviation units this summer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Air Force Special Operations Command has begun investigating what is causing the clutches in the
