{"id":14204,"date":"2015-01-29T20:17:49","date_gmt":"2015-01-29T20:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2015\/01\/29\/bulgaria-eyes-new-fighter-jets\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:27:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:27:12","slug":"bulgaria-eyes-new-fighter-jets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2015\/01\/29\/bulgaria-eyes-new-fighter-jets\/","title":{"rendered":"Bulgaria Eyes New Fighter Jets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WARSAW \u2014 Bulgaria is considering buying new fighter jets for its air force, the defense minister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolai Nenchev has said the government is considering buying new fighter jets for the country&#8217;s Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">In the first quarter of 2015, <\/span>Defense Minister Nikolai Nenchev <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the minister <\/span>said he aims to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">make a <\/span>visit <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to <\/span>the US in the first quarter of this year to discuss the potential procurement, as reported by local news weekly Sofia Globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defense investment strategy presented by the country&#8217;s previous government states Bulgaria aims to acquire new fighter jets to replace its Soviet-built aircraft. When the country joined NATO in March 2004, Sofia vowed to replace six of its Mikoyan MiG-21 aircraft and acquire eight new fighter jets by 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nenchev said that, due to the &#8220;inflated&#8221; cost of maintenance, the Bulgarian ministry would also no longer rely on <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Russia&#8217;s <\/span>Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG to repair and service the country&#8217;s 12 MiG-29 fighter jets, and could instead opt for awarding a new contract to a Polish defense company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current contract is set to expire in September<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> 2015<\/span>, and the Defense Ministry is <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">currently <\/span>negotiating with Poland, which offers preferential conditions to Bulgaria, according to Nenchev. It is also noteworthy that Poland is a NATO member state, according to the minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two engines of Bulgaria&#8217;s MiG-29 fighters are enabled with a take-off thrust of 8,300 kgf, according to data from the Bulgarian Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Email: <a
