{"id":14399,"date":"2022-03-30T11:07:54","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T11:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/03\/30\/new-gear-headed-to-army-paratroopers-and-air-crews\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:24:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:24:48","slug":"new-gear-headed-to-army-paratroopers-and-air-crews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2022\/03\/30\/new-gear-headed-to-army-paratroopers-and-air-crews\/","title":{"rendered":"New gear headed to Army paratroopers and air crews"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/09\/23\/new-army-aviation-warrants-will-no-longer-be-automatically-promoted-after-two-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">aircrews <\/a>are going to get a new combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/09\/17\/paratroopers-test-out-new-dismounted-gps-device\/\" target=\"_blank\">equipment <\/a>and body armor that will be a third lighter, less bulkier and feature upgraded survival gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, prospective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/05\/07\/paratroopers-with-82nd-airborne-fly-non-stop-to-jump-into-estonia-tonight\/\" target=\"_blank\">paratroopers<\/a> will see a new chute on their training tower that more closely mimics the actual way they\u2019ll drop from an aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Jeffery Timmick assistant product manager for air soldier systems and Capt. John Waters, APM for personnel airdrop, both spoke recently with Army Times about the new gear hitting the aircrew and airborne soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/10\/20\/from-growing-pilots-to-shifting-training-while-also-meeting-growing-demands-army-aviation-has-challenges\/?fb_comment_id=2292823570826517_2337269709715236\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Growing pilots, shifting training: Army aviation has challenges<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, aircrews have separate flexible body armor, combat equipment with onboard tethers, a built-in flotation device and survival gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work being done at Air Warrior, the program that runs acquisition for all things aircrew, aims to cut the 30-pound load carrier and body armor devices by as much as 10 pounds while reducing the bulk by about 15%, Timmick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"379\" height=\"381\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Parachute-Flotation-Device-PFD-2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Parachute-Flotation-Device-PFD-2.jpg.jpg 379w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Parachute-Flotation-Device-PFD-2.jpg.jpg?resize=150,150 150w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Parachute-Flotation-Device-PFD-2.jpg.jpg?resize=298,300 298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 379px) 100vw, 379px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Paratrooper floatation devices are getting upgrades. (Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A still in-the-works design will also move the current flotation system from inflating under the soldier\u2019s head and instead go buoyant across the chest removing field of view and head movement issues with the current system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Timmick said that the program plans to conduct operational tests with 25th Combat Aviation Brigade in the latter part of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For future paratroopers, a decades-old training parachute is leaping into the 21st Century when the 250-foot drop tower at Fort Benning, Georgia\u2019s Airborne School gets the new J3 parachute system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"302\" height=\"227\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Parachute-Flotation-Device-PFD-3.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Parachute-Flotation-Device-PFD-3.jpg.jpg 302w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Parachute-Flotation-Device-PFD-3.jpg.jpg?resize=300,225 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Army is redesigning its parachute flotation devices for paratroopers and aircrews. (Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s where airborne-in-training soldiers conduct their \u201cparachute landing fall\u201d under canopy similar to what they\u2019ll face when falling from an airplane later in training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upgrades to the static line parachutes over the years have outpaced the ability of the legacy training parachute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waters told Army Times that the J3 uses newer materials but has the same design and circular shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"296\" height=\"222\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Parachute-Flotation-Device-PFD-4.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26523\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Army is redesigning its parachute flotation devices for paratroopers and aircrews. (Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference might sound small but the T11 parachute falls at a rate of about 18.5 feet per second. The training chutes can take as long as 24 seconds. Exact fielding dates were not immediately available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The device will still be CO2-cartridge-based and require jumpers to manually initiate the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the design, which previously only kept the head above water will also now include two bladders beneath the user\u2019s armpits to elevate their
