Jeff Harrigian, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteman.af.mil\/News\/Article\/2539874\/b-2s-land-at-lajes-field-to-join-btf-mission\/\" target=_blank>a release Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bomber task force missions in Europe intend to show strength in defense of the NATO alliance by making adversaries think twice about a potential attack. B-2s are stopping off at Lajes Field for a quick, \u201chot-pit refuel,\u201d where airmen gas up the plane with its engines still running before heading out to fly sorties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bombers will \u201cperform mission-essential tasks during several upcoming \u2026 sorties,\u201d the Air Force said, without elaborating on what the tasks entail. It\u2019s unclear how long the B-2s, which can carry nuclear or conventional weapons, will stay overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe B-2\u2032s low-observable, or \u2018stealth,\u2019 characteristics give it the ability to penetrate an enemy\u2019s most sophisticated defenses and threaten its most-valued, heavily defended targets while avoiding adversary detection, tracking, and engagement,\u201d the Air Force said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spirit bombers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/03\/09\/b-2-bomber-task-force-deploys-to-portugal\/\" target=_blank>deployed to Portugal<\/a> for task force missions in March 2020 as well, and have recently flown task force missions out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/08\/12\/b-2s-deploy-to-diego-garcia\/\" target=_blank>island of Diego Garcia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force plans to send its bombers to a broader range of places for frequent task force deployments throughout the year, Gen. Tim Ray, the head of Air Force Global Strike Command, told reporters last month.
