{"id":14894,"date":"2019-03-21T01:52:11","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T01:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/03\/21\/with-an-eye-to-china-and-russia-the-us-navy-plans-a-lethal-upgrade-to-its-destroyers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:28:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:28:52","slug":"with-an-eye-to-china-and-russia-the-us-navy-plans-a-lethal-upgrade-to-its-destroyers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2019\/03\/21\/with-an-eye-to-china-and-russia-the-us-navy-plans-a-lethal-upgrade-to-its-destroyers\/","title":{"rendered":"With an eye to China and Russia, the US Navy plans a lethal upgrade to its destroyers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Facing ever-faster missiles and increasingly complicated air threats from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2018\/01\/30\/the-pentagon-is-planning-for-war-with-china-and-russia-can-it-handle-both\/\" target=\"_blank\">China and Russia<\/a>, the U.S. Navy is moving toward a major upgrade to its stalwart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/05\/19\/bath-forges-ahead-with-flight-iia-ddgs-gears-up-for-flight-iii\/\">Arleigh Burke destroyer<\/a> fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is planning to buy a scaled version of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/sas\/2017\/03\/31\/raytheon-radar-executes-first-ballistic-missile-test\/\" target=_blank>Raytheon\u2019s SPY-6 air and missile defense radar<\/a> to replace the SPY-1D arrays on the Flight IIA destroyers, Defense News has learned. The upgrade will bolster the radar sensitivity and sophistication of the Flight IIA Burkes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move is likely prompted by the Navy\u2019s concern about the proliferation of anti-ship cruise missiles with sophisticated evasive maneuvers and ever-increasing speeds, investments that China and Russia make no secret about pursuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, the Navy acknowledged it was pursuing the SPY-6 array upgrades as part of the 2020 budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPer the President&#8217;s Budget submission for FY2020 Navy will begin procurement of 24 Radar Module Assembly (RMA) SPY-6 radar sets, and associated electrical and cooling equipment in FY2022, for installation in a DDG Flight IIA beginning in FY2025. The specific hull will be named later,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2018\/06\/24\/future-navy-weapons-will-need-lots-power-thats-a-huge-engineering-challenge\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/lockheed.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Future US Navy weapons will need lots of power. That\u2019s a huge engineering challenge.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Integrating futuristic technologies on to existing platforms, even on some of the newer ships with plenty of excess power capacity, will be an incredibly difficult engineering challenge, experts say.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The array is a smaller version of the SPY-6 intended for the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/05\/10\/the-newest-weapon-in-the-us-navys-arsenal-is-now-under-construction\/\" target=_blank> Flight III DDG<\/a>, the first of which is now under construction at Huntington Ingalls Industries. The SPY-6 destined for DDG-125 will have 37 of what are known as radar modular assemblies, or RMA, which are 2-foot-by-2-foot-by-2-foot boxes that use gallium nitride technology to direct radar energy on air targets. The Flight IIA version will have 24 RMAs in the array.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A version of the radar planned for the FFG(X) future frigate is a nine-RMA configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is aiming to upgrade all of its DDGs to Aegis Baseline 9 or higher with a ballistic missile defense capability and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2018\/04\/12\/navy-will-extend-ddgs-45-year-service-life-no-destroyer-left-behind-officials-say\" target=_blank>extend the service lives to 45 years <\/a>as part of an effort to grow the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Navy is going to try to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/06\/07\/the-us-navys-ships-are-getting-old-they-might-be-getting-a-lot-older\/\" target=\"_blank\"> get 50 years out of its Flight IIA ships<\/a>. The IIAs make up the bulk of the DDG fleet, with 46 total planned for the service \u2014 DDG-79 through DDG-124. DDG-127 will also be a Flight IIA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That upgraded SPY-6 will be far easier to maintain than the current SPY-1D.
