That prompted Brig. Gen. Brook Leonard, commander of the 56th Fighter Wing, to order a pause in flight operations in June while officials from the Air Force and the F-35 Joint Program Executive Office analyzed each incident. Although they had hoped to find a common thread linking the incidents together, no root cause has emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/06\/09\/f-35s-at-luke-air-force-base-grounded-after-pilots-suffered-oxygen-deprivation\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/f-35.JPG_965761.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">F-35s at Luke Air Force Base grounded after pilots suffered oxygen deprivation<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The 56th Fighter Wing at Luke Air Force Base has cancelled local flying operations for its F-35A Lightning II fighters after five incidents in which pilots experienced hypoxia-like symptoms.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flight operations resumed June 21 with a number of restrictions in place, including a base-wide ban on flying the F-35 at altitudes higher than 25,000 feet. That restriction was removed Wednesday, Leonard announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have learned a lot over the past two months, and while we have yet to identify a singular cause, we have reduced potential causes for labored breathing [and] carbon monoxide ingestion, and refined our procedures and training,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cWe have great confidence in the F-35A and the ability and training of our pilots. We will continue to closely monitor operations and work with the Joint Program Office and the Human Performance Wing on future improvements as we move forward building the future of airpower.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, Leonard told Defense News that he was considering removing restrictions on F-35 flights out of Luke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce we kind of sit back down with the instructor pilots, once we sit back down with the experts and kind of analyze the data that we have, if we really haven\u2019t found anything that pops out as causal \u2014 or if we have, and we can fix it with the mitigation [actions] that we\u2019ve put in place and what we\u2019ve learned so far \u2014 we\u2019ll probably go and eliminate the 25,000-foot restriction,\u201d he said then. \u201cBut that one needs to be determined based on the data that we still have to analyze.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2017\/08\/14\/air-force-looks-toward-lessening-f-35-flight-restrictions-at-luke-afb\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3587879.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Air Force looks toward easing F-35 flight restrictions at Luke AFB<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">However, once experts weigh in with more information, the Air Force might have enough data to make the decision to open the F-35A&#039;s flight envelope at Luke Air Force Base.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision to remove the altitude restriction was based on several factors, Maj. Rebecca Heyse, spokeswoman for the 56th Fighter Wing, told Defense News. Teams at Luke completed heat stress and chemical exposure testing \u2014 basically, an evaluation of whether pilots were exposed to excessive heat or carbon monoxide on the ramp \u2014 but initial assessments showed no strong evidence of chemical factors causing contamination in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonard also developed increased confidence as F-35 operators flew regularly over two months with only one additional incident of hypoxia-like symptoms, which were due to a faulty valve on a pilot\u2019s mask. That event is not connected to the series of five unexplained incidents that occurred during May and June, Air Force officials have said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The base also found success with updated pilot training and pre-flight procedures, such as increasing the minimum levels for the backup oxygen system and having pilots mask up as soon as they get to the jet, Heyse
