COLOGNE, Germany \u2015 The Belgian Navy has finished a weekslong series of test flights with Schiebel\u2019s CAMCOPTER S-100 drone as part of the sea service\u2019s search for new maritime-surveillance<\/a> and search-and-rescue equipment, the company announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The test plan, which ran June 21 to July 1, constituted an initial step for Belgian officials to identify \u201cthe possibilities of such systems and sensors,\u201d Lt. Cmdr. D. Biermans is quoted as saying in the statement. In particular, officials had an eye on the unmanned copter\u2019s operation in the country\u2019s confined airspace \u2014 on land and over water \u2015 and \u201copportunities for the domain of coastal security and prospects for further developments,\u201d Biermans said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belgium sports a relatively straight coastline measuring close to 70 kilometers, roughly equivalent in length to that between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
