The company\u2019s focus in advancing ramjet artillery all along was to take the fresh experience and apply it to a new engine for high-speed, ultralong-range anti-air missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firm essentially took a traditional solid-fueled rocket motor-powered missile and turned it into an air breather in flight to boost range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The model at Nammo\u2019s booth looked reminiscent of its Evolved Seasparrow Missile, or ESSM, but the prototype is designed to be scalable for different missions and launcher platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new ramjet-powered engine missile\u2019s range is expected to reach over 400 kilometers, according to Frank Moller, vice president of strategy and business development in the aerospace propulsion division of Nammo.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2018\/03\/20\/army-to-demonstrate-precision-strike-hypersonics-and-ramjet-capabilities-in-just-a-few-years\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PaladinHowitzer.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army to demo precision strike, hypersonics, ramjet capabilities in just a few years<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army could see demonstrations of hypersonics and ramjet technology to get longer ranges for its precision-strike capability as early as 2019, according to the Long-Range Precision Fires modernization team lead.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The range could be extended with additional booster capability. For perspective, an ESSM\u2019s range is less than 100 kilometers, and the extended-range version would reach 150 kilometers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nammo believes this fills a gap in the market in terms of range and capability, Moller said. \u201cYou see that within new threats that are coming up, weapons launched from greater distance, and we need to counter that, we need more range,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To counter enemy capabilities and deter Russia, range is king, and not only in the U.S. where the Army has prioritized long-range precision fires development, but for European countries as well. Looking at Russia\u2019s S-400 air defense system and its cruise missile development, for example Europe and its allies need more range in their missile systems to counter that, Moller said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSame thing goes for artillery because I think every caliber the West has had, the East has had some range that goes a little bit farther, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">European countries\u2019 capabilities only lie in 1990s-era point defense against short-range missiles, said Endre Lunde, a Nammo spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/07\/18\/first-flight-tests-for-armys-precision-strike-missile-pushed-to-end-of-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HIMARS.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">First flight tests for Army\u2019s Precision Strike Missile pushed to end of year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Precision Strike Missile will begin flight tests in November and December at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One unique aspects of Nammo\u2019s missile engine is that the booster is built into the missile itself, and during flight it transitions from a traditional solid-fueled rocket to an air-breathing system, Moller said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design of the propulsion system eliminates the need to carry a large amount of oxygen onboard like a regular solid-fueled rocket motor. \u201cAs long as these missiles are going to fly in the atmosphere, why not utilize the oxygen that is around them and reduce the weight of the propellant?\u201d Moller said. \u201cThis allows us to have a much smaller missile\u201d because the weight of the oxygen is removed from the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the missile is fired and reaches Mach 2.5 to Mach 2.8, the air intake on the system opens up and uses the incoming air to ignite the propellant inside. Some of the air goes directly over the propellant and some goes straight into the afterburner, Mollery explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When in air-breathing mode, the missile is capable of reaching anywhere from Mach 3.5 to Mach 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ramjet engine is safer for firing in urban terrain because boosters typically fall out of the sky and therefore must land somewhere. Nammo has integrated the booster motor inside the burn chamber, Moller explained. The propellant burns to reach roughly Mach 3, and then the ramjet takes over. \u201cNothing falls off in urban areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engine is also flexible enough to go on a variety of launchers, from ground to ship to air platforms. Moller said there is \u201cgreat interest\u201d in the U.S. military for the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/video\/2019\/06\/20\/nammo-boeing-to-partner-on-ramjet-artillery\/\" target=\"_blank\">has already teamed with Boeing <\/a>on ramjet artillery development, but there are also applications for the technology for such possible programs like a new interceptor for the U.S. Army\u2019s Integrated Air and Missile Defense system or another longer-range missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The front end of the missile would be tailored to the mission, and it would be able to integrate with a variety of sensors, which is critical for targeting at long ranges. For example, an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter\u2019s sensor could identify a target and communicate to the missile to destroy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With combinations like that, \u201cthen you very quickly fill some of those gaps, closing the range gap. You don\u2019t need a new platform either on the launcher side or the sensor side \u2014 you just need the integration,\u201d Lunde noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company plans
