shipyard\u2019s $45 million tax break because they say conditions outlined in a 2018 law weren\u2019t met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/speakergideon.com\/\" target=_blank>House Speaker Sara Gideon<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mainesenate.org\/senator\/senator\/troy-jackson\/\" target=_blank>Senate President Troy Jackson <\/a>sent a letter to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gdbiw.com\/\" target=_blank>Bath Iron Works <\/a>that stated the average wage at the shipyard has declined, the company has hired mostly low-wage scale workers and is planning to hire out-of-state subcontractors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressherald.com\/2020\/01\/08\/top-democratic-lawmakers-threaten-biws-45-million-tax-break\/\" target=_blank>the Portland Press Herald reported<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We championed this legislation based on the promise of continued good-paying jobs at the BIW shipbuilding facility,&#8221; Gideon and Jackson wrote in their letter dated Dec. 20. &#8220;It would be unfortunate if the Legislature had to reconsider this special tax credit because of the ever-growing evidence that BIW has not lived up to their end of the bargain.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a allegation that they are not meeting the requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company blamed the tight labor market and the retirement of highly skilled workers who had earned higher wages than their replacements as well as the need to meet Navy deadlines for completing work on ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top Senate Republicans also responded in a joint statement, writing that it is \u201cmindboggling\u201d that Democratic leaders would threaten \u201cone of the state\u2019s largest employers\u201d because they were not able to hire enough
