{"id":16927,"date":"2018-02-27T22:43:42","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T22:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/27\/air-force-t-6s-resume-flying-after-hypoxia-like-scares\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:24:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:24:32","slug":"air-force-t-6s-resume-flying-after-hypoxia-like-scares","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2018\/02\/27\/air-force-t-6s-resume-flying-after-hypoxia-like-scares\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force T-6s resume flying after hypoxia-like scares"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force resumed flying its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/02\/23\/air-forces-grounded-t-6-trainers-could-fly-again-next-week\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">T-6 Texan II<\/a> training aircraft Tuesday after a rash of hypoxia-like scares grounded them for nearly a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while the Air Force is homing in on what led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/02\/01\/air-force-grounds-all-t-6-flights-after-multiple-hypoxia-like-problems\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">physiological problems<\/a>, the final root cause has not yet been determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 19th Air Force grounded its T-6 fleet Feb. 1 after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/02\/01\/13-hypoxia-like-events-in-one-week-led-to-t-6-fleet-grounding\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">13 pilots at three bases<\/a> experienced \u201cunexplained physiological events\u201d during the last week of January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AETC said that the incidents were different from \u201cclassic hypoxia\u201d \u2015 a condition that occurs when someone has too little oxygen in their body, putting them at risk of becoming confused, faint or even passing out. But the release did not offer any more details about the events pilots experienced, and how they differed from hypoxia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Gen. Patrick Doherty, commander of the 19th Air Force, ordered the grounding lifted after the Air Force \u2015 along with experts from the Navy, NASA and medical specialties \u2015 collected and analyzed data from pilots who experienced the problems and their aircraft. The Air Force also studied the Navy\u2019s similar experiences with its T-45 Goshawk.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/02\/06\/lawmaker-blasts-air-force-general-over-unsolved-hypoxia-problem\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/t-6a-texan.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lawmaker blasts Air Force general over unsolved hypoxia problem<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The chairman of a House Armed Services subcommittee blasted the Air Force\u2019s deputy chief of staff for operations Tuesday over the service\u2019s inability to get to the bottom of the hypoxia problem plaguing pilots.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe operational pause was required to provide a robust and intrusive look at every component on every aircraft connected to or critical to the On-Board Oxygen Generating System,\u201d or OBOGS, Doherty said in the release. \u201cOur intent was to ensure aircrew awareness of UPEs, as well as newly-required aerospace physiology training, checklist procedures, and flight equipment modifications that ensure aircrew safety.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AETC spokesman Master Sgt. Joshua Strang said there are no known flight restrictions at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the 19th will conduct new and recurring inspections of the OBOGS components to catch problems and, AETC hopes, reduce the number of hypoxia or hypoxia-like incidents in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instructor pilots will start flying again first to regain their currency, AETC said. Students will follow and resume flying by the end of the week. Jeffrey Allen\/Air Force)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doherty said that after gathering data from pilots, maintainers, engineers and flight surgeons, experts concluded that the symptoms suggested the integrity of the Texans\u2019 OBOGS had been compromised, degrading its performance and leading to the physiological events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the release, Doherty said component failures or degredations affected the pressure, flow and content of the oxygen running through the OBOGS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFurther investigation by engineers and flight surgeons is needed, but the speed at which professionals descended on this challenge to share their expertise and solutions was phenomenal,\u201d Doherty said. \u201cWith 30 years of flying experience, looking at all of the facts and listening to our experts, these particular types of T-6 UPEs aren\u2019t unexplained anymore in my mind. We have zeroed in on a handful of components that are degrading or failing to perform and needed to be replaced or repaired more often than the Air Force anticipated when they bought the aircraft.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked to further describe the events pilots experienced, Strang said \u201ceach event is different and being looked into individually.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUPEs are, by their nature, unexplained, so, while one such symptom could be hypoxia, there are a litany of other possible
