They included two RC-135V\/W Rivet Joint planes equipped to listen in on communications signals and an RQ-4 Global Hawk drone that gathers high-altitude images and other data through various sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2022\/01\/26\/us-nato-deliver-counteroffers-to-russia-on-defusing-ukraine-war-prospects\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1237978070.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US, NATO deliver counteroffers to Russia on defusing Ukraine war prospects<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">U.S. and NATO officials have separately delivered new sets of proposals to the Russian government for sorting out security concerns in Europe, while rejecting Russia\u2019s demand that the alliance forever close its door to Ukraine.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Global Hawk may have been peering down at a string of Russian troops built up along the border it shares with Ukraine, as well as to the smaller country\u2019s south, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ameliairheart\/status\/1485723638624141318\" target=\"_blank\">expert analysis posted online suggests<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the second RQ-4 flight to make this pattern in the last week, making use of the same airframe,\u201d aviation tracking hobbyist Amelia Smith <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ameliairheart\/status\/1485723636849946634\">tweeted Monday<\/a>. \u201cThere is a possibility that we will see the return of the daily RQ-4 flights over and around Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ameliairheart\/status\/1484613545392316416\">noted an MQ-9 Reaper drone\u2019s visit<\/a> to Russian-occupied Crimea in southern Ukraine on Jan. 21. Twitter user @ZaesADSB, another flight tracker, caught an E-8C Joint STARS jet \u2014 designed to track the movement of ground targets \u2014 headed east over Ukraine three days earlier as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019ve been joined by Rivet Joints, E-3 airborne target tracking planes, P-8 antisubmarine patrol jets and other military airframes flown by NATO, the United Kingdom, Germany and the U.S. Army and Navy. Spokespeople for U.S. European Command and Air Force officials in the region did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of this command\u2019s primary tasks is to provide indications and warning of military developments to our nation\u2019s leaders and we also contribute to NATO\u2019s shared understanding of developments in Europe,\u201d EUCOM spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Russ Wolfkiel told Air Force Times when contacted about the U.S. response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/russian-and-ukrainian-spring-2021-war-scare\" target=\"_blank\">a similar Russian troop buildup last spring<\/a>. \u201cWith regard to U.S. activities, I can tell you that we have been watching the situation in Ukraine very closely and USAFE\u2019s contributions with airborne ISR are indispensable to maintaining a coherent picture of ongoing developments. However, in the interest of operational security and as a matter of policy we do not provide details on specific missions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though not flying missions over Ukraine, Air Force assets that could be called up for strike operations are nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">F-15E Strike Eagles from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/01\/26\/seymour-johnson-f-15es-arrive-in-baltics-for-nato-air-policing-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">arrived in Estonia Wednesday<\/a> to bolster NATO\u2019s air policing efforts in the Baltics. Those missions deploy offensive and defensive aircraft to fend off planes that try to enter NATO airspace without permission and have grown more frequent since the last time Russia used major force against Ukraine in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/01\/26\/russia-threatens-retaliation-if-ukraine-demands-not-met\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/UkieRussia6.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Russia threatens retaliation if Ukraine demands not met<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Russia says it has no plans to invade Ukraine, but the U.S. and allies are planning for the worst.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine is not a NATO member, but sides with the Western military coalition and receives aid from those nations. Russia is pushing NATO to permanently bar Ukraine from ever joining the coalition, which would extend it the protection of its mutual defense pact. Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the organization will respect any country\u2019s own decision whether to apply for membership or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/putin-russia-ukraine-invasion-nato-biden-rcna13245\">Experts have speculated<\/a> an incursion could serve as a step toward rebuilding a Soviet Union-like bloc, as well as to bolster Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s popularity ahead of a reelection bid in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brig. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine\u2019s defense intelligence agency, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2021\/11\/20\/russia-preparing-to-attack-ukraine-by-late-january-ukraine-defense-intelligence-agency-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\">told Military Times in November<\/a> he believed Russia would launch an attack by the beginning of February. That could involve airstrikes, artillery and armor attacks, plus airborne and amphibious assaults across the country, Military Times previously reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oleksiireznikov\/status\/1486043999701975045\">said on Tuesday<\/a> the former Soviet republic expects to receive a fourth shipment of weapons and other military hardware from the U.S. soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/tags\/image\/europeansupport2022\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Air Force posted pictures of airmen<\/a> loading Lockheed Martin-made shoulder-fired Javelin anti-tank missiles, launchers and other supplies onto commercial jets Jan. 21-22. Those units, the 60th Aerial Port Squadron and the 436th Aerial Port Squadron, are respectively based at California\u2019s Travis Air Force Base in California and Delaware\u2019s Dover Air Force Base.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/01\/26\/as-us-troop-readiness-increases-war-on-ukraines-front-lines-drags-on\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ukie1.25.22.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">As US troop readiness increases, war on Ukraine\u2019s front lines drags on<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Up to 8,500 U.S. troops are on heightened readiness in case Russia further attacks Ukraine.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince 2014, the United States has committed more than $5.4 billion in total [security and non-security] assistance to Ukraine,\u201d the Air Force said in captions of photos showing the ammunition\u2019s journey from Dover. \u201cThe United States reaffirms its steadfast commitment to Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity in support of a secure and prosperous Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Air Force is likewise pressing ahead with a plan to supply two air bases in central west Ukraine with navigation systems, including one that helps determine an aircraft\u2019s position in relation to its destination and another that offers precision guidance for runway landings. A <a href=\"https:\/\/sam.gov\/opp\/fb790f11a2e1470f91c952bd88993c93\/view\">solicitation posted to the federal procurement website<\/a> Dec. 21 calls for proposals by Feb. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia has amassed more than 100,000 troops on three sides of Ukraine over the past few months, prompting backlash from Western countries and stoking fears of war in Europe.
