Jack Reed<\/a>, D-R.I., and ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, on Thursday requested chamber Republicans and the administration grant access to all files regarding \u201cKavanaugh\u2019s (past) service in the White House that address national security and the scope of presidential authority on national security matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kavanaugh worked in the White House Counsel\u2019s Office under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2015\/06\/17\/afghan-war-over-then-set-us-free-guantanamo-detainees-say\/\" target=_blank>President George W. Bush<\/a> from 2001 to 2003, including during the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reed said senators need to understand his involvement in a host of issues \u2014 including policies on the detention of enemy combatants and domestic surveillance programs \u2014 before taking a vote on his nomination.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2018\/08\/16\/retired-admiral-navy-seal-compares-president-trumps-actions-to-mccarthy-era-witch-hunts\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mcravenjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Retired admiral, Navy SEAL compares President Trump\u2019s actions to McCarthy-era witch hunts<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Admiral has been outspoken on Trump&#039;s actions before, hitting him on media comments and Syria strike.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Supreme Court is the final authority on the interpretation of our Constitution, including the scope of the president\u2019s national security powers,\u201d Reed said in a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSenators serving on the Armed Services Committee should have access to facts about Judge Kavanaugh\u2019s involvement in past presidential assertions of national security authority in order to carry out the Senate\u2019s Constitutional responsibility to provide advice and consent on his nomination to the Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The request is the latest in a growing list of demands made by Senate Democrats in advance of Kavanaugh\u2019s confirmation hearing, set to start on Sept. 4. Party leaders have accused Republicans of rushing the process by not providing enough access and review time on the judge\u2019s past decisions and work history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Republican leaders have labeled it nothing more than a stalling tactic. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, noted earlier this week that more than 258,000 pages of documents have been made available already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe reason why we&#8217;re talking about the great paper chase is because, I think, our Democratic colleagues have found out all of their other attempts to undermine or to criticize this nominee have fallen flat,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd so now it&#8217;s just a question how much paper is going to be produced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Reed said in a statement Thursday that Kavanaugh\u2019s past work \u201cplaced him in a position to influence legal policy\u201d for the Bush administration and the the judge \u201cdeveloped novel, and at times concerning, theories of presidential power in the area of national security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats have also demanded that the confirmation hearings be delayed in light of the recent conviction of President Donald Trump\u2019s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former lawyer Michael Cohen, arguing that the Supreme Court could be pulled into legal proceedings against the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican leaders have said they have no intention of delaying the hearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, President Trump\u2019s former lawyer pleaded guilty in federal court to committing felonies at the behest of &amp; to benefit then-candidate Donald Trump.
