Jay Raymond\u2019s plea for more freedom to overhaul facilities, IT systems and other infrastructure at the Florida and California sites that send rockets with commercial and national security payloads to space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raymond previously asked for Congress to alter federal law so the 1-year-old service can pursue its \u201cRange of the Future\u201d idea, members of the House Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee wrote in their version of the annual defense policy bill, released July 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2018If we fail to do this effectively, our installations will become a limiting factor to launch capability,\u2019\u201d they added, quoting Raymond.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/06\/03\/now-boarding-space-force-wants-to-turn-launch-ranges-into-rocket-airports\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1000w_q95-11-2.jpg-2.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Now boarding: Space Force wants to turn launch ranges into rocket \u2018airports\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Space Force launch range officials want their installations to be more like an airport departure terminal.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers are asking to see the Space Force\u2019s detailed plan to pay for and complete those upgrades. They\u2019d like to know if the service needs any further leeway from Congress to improve its physical infrastructure, including potential legislative ideas. That report should go to the congressional defense committees no later than three months after the defense policy bill becomes law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patrick Space Force Base officials in Florida have floated the idea of asking Congress to change federal spending rules so the military can use private funding to pay for those infrastructure changes. Because of a legal firewall that prohibits public entities from using private companies\u2019 dollars to pay for projects, the Department of the Air Force is struggling to keep up with the facilities updates that commercial launch providers want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey get a pretty good deal from being able to lease our facilities and the things that we do with them, but it\u2019s very difficult [when] they go, \u2018Hey, I\u2019d like to be able to help out with that,\u2019\u201d Brig. Gen. Doug Scheiss, then-commander of the 45th Space Wing at Patrick, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcemag.com\/cape-canaveral-wants-companies-to-help-pay-for-range-updates\/\">told Air Force Magazine in February 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accepting money from commercial companies for projects like widening roads at Cape Canaveral, as Blue Origin has requested, or modernizing the range\u2019s communications network, could save money and speed up those improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/space\/2021\/06\/21\/faa-and-air-force-sign-agreement-on-commercial-launches-from-space-force-bases\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/49051988851_0b422e1603_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">FAA and Air Force sign agreement on commercial launches from Space Force bases<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The memorandum will reduce red tape for commercial launches at Space Force ranges, the two parties said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Space Force envisions turning its historic launch ranges into \u201cplug-and-play\u201d sites where companies can show up and send rockets into orbit without needing specialized equipment. Cape Canaveral and its sister range at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, should be as streamlined as airports, where airliners shuffle in and out throughout the week, service officials argue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other updates in the works include autonomous flight safety systems that can automatically destroy a rocket if it flies off course, rather than needing a human on-site to do the job; developing more launch real estate on Florida\u2019s Space Coast as it runs out of room; and creating reusable facilities that can handle multiple rockets a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patrick expects to host around 50 launches in 2021, while Vandenberg is slated to facilitate 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we bring more and more commercial providers on board, we\u2019re going to have more and more launches and get to that ultimate \u2026 goal of two a day,\u201d Brig. Gen.
