href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2017\/12\/18\/v-280-valor-flies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bell\u2019s V-280 Valor tiltrotor demonstrator<\/a>, participating in the U.S. Army\u2019s Joint Multi-Role technology demonstration, has wrapped up low-speed agility maneuver testing \u2014 completing the final key performance parameters left to prove out with the system, according to Ryan Ehinger, the company\u2019s V-280 program manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly a year-and-a-half since it\u2019s first flight in December 2017, the technology demonstration of the V-280 in Texas has stayed on schedule, ticking of KPPs as the aircraft continued to fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have met all the KPPs we have set out to meet for JMR,\u201d Ehinger told Defense News in a May 17 interview, and most importantly, proving a tiltrotor can be agile.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/06\/19\/bells-v-280-valor-shows-off-agility-speed-in-first-public-flight-demo\/\" agility, speed in first public flight demo<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The V-280 Valor took to the skies above Amarillo, Texas, in its first public demonstration to a small group of reporters June 18.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The low-speed agility tests demonstrated the Valor has raw control power in pitch, roll and yaw maneuvers that meet the Army\u2019s highest performance standard for handling qualities, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis latest flight milestone proves that the V-280 Valor tiltrotor delivers first-rate handling for pilots during low-speed maneuvers without sacrificing speed, range or payload that the military needs for multi-domain operations,\u201d Ehinger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell isn\u2019t grounding the aircraft now that it\u2019s finished ticking off all of the Army demonstration requirements and will now continue to work on incorporating new mission systems beyond its first major mission system demonstration of Lockheed Martin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2019\/04\/16\/bell-v-280-flies-with-system-that-can-see-through-aircraft\/\" target=_blank>Pilotage Distributed Aperture System<\/a> (PDAS) that allows crew and pilots to \u201csee through\u201d the aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed Martin is partnered with Bell on the JMR program, but also owns Sikorsky, which is partnered with Bell\u2019s JMR TD competitor Boeing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/03\/21\/sikorsky-boeing-defiant-helo-takes-first-flight\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sikorsky and Boeing flew its SB-1 Defiant coaxial helicopter <\/a>for the first time in March this year \u2014 a delay from the original first flight deadline due to blade manufacturing challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What Bell\u2019s V-280 and Sikorsky-Boeing\u2019s SB-1 are proving during the demonstration is informing the Army\u2019s path to acquire a Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/04\/04\/us-army-plans-to-field-a-future-long-range-assault-helicopter-by-2030\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Defiant1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army plans to field a future long-range assault helicopter by 2030<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army has released an RFI to procure a new long-range assault helicopter to replace UH-60 Black Hawks.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ehinger said Bell also plans to begin demonstrating some autonomous capabilities by the end of the year. Initially, that autonomous flight will include a take-off and hover and an ability to convert from vertical take-off and landing mode into cruise mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell is also working on building the V-247, an unmanned tiltrotor for the Marine Corps, and both the V-280 autonomy efforts and the V-247 development will inform each other, Ehringer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, the V-280 has flown over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/05\/15\/v-280-valor-hits-cruise-speeds\/\" target=_blank>300 knots true airspeed<\/a> in forward flight mode, has logged over 110 hours of flight and 225 hours of rotor-turn, has completed 50-degree banked turns and has climbed 4,500 feet per minute and sustained flight at an altitude of 11,500 feet. It has also flown over 370 miles in a single flight ferry and also most recently completed open-door fast-rope demonstrations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bell shows the V-280
