Ronald Boxall, the Navy\u2019s director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2018\/04\/09\/the-navy-once-again-soft-pedals-its-own-355-ship-count-assessment\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Surface Warfare<\/a>. In fact, it should save money, Navy leaders argued during a panel at the Sea-Air-Space Exposition Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boxall first spoke about the push for cross domain integration within the sea service during a panel at the Navy Association\u2019s annual symposium in January. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter that, I read some of the blogs like you shouldn\u2019t do \u2014 but I did anyway \u2014 and it said things like \u2018it\u2019s a bunch of gobbledygook,\u2019\u201d he said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are genuine moves being made towards blending assets within the Navy\u2019s separate missions that will be critical in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2017\/12\/30\/new-in-2018-conflict-hot-spots-to-watch\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">new threat environment<\/a>, according to Boxall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I came into surface warfare, my job was to make ships as good as they possibly could be with the money you have,\u201d he said. \u201cThat was really what we drove to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, though, \u201cwe realized it\u2019s not about us at surface warfare, it\u2019s about the entire Navy and how we bring our forces to bear,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFast forward a few years,\u201d Boxall said. \u201cI look and say \u2018how is it we\u2019re using surface ships to maximize the capabilities of our force,\u2019 and conversely, \u2018what is it that I need submarines, aircraft, and the network to do to improve what I can do with my ships?\u2019 \u2026 That\u2019s what\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2018\/04\/10\/in-japan-a-hard-hit-fleet-is-steadying-on-a-new-course\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mccain_today.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">In Japan, a hard-hit US Navy fleet is steadying on a new course<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">After a disastrous summer in 2017, the Japan-based U.S. 7th Fleet is effecting a course correction that it hopes restores readiness and avoids future loss of life.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sentiment was echoed by Rear Adm. John Tammen, director of the Undersea Warfare Division at the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.
