So we\u2019re watching very carefully to make sure the installations are open to allow that work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2019\/07\/25\/boeing-drops-from-next-generation-icbm-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\">the sole bidder <\/a>on the GBSD program, Northrop Grumman is anticipated to win an estimated $85 billion to design and build the Air Force\u2019s next-generation intercontinental ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/nuclear-arsenal\/2020\/03\/09\/pentagon-to-award-mobile-nuclear-reactor-contracts-this-week\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/reactor_nuke.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pentagon awards contracts to design mobile nuclear reactor<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Department of Defense has two parallel nuclear reactor programs underway, one for domestic use, one for use abroad.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northrop and Boeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/air\/2017\/08\/21\/boeing-northrop-move-forward-on-next-gen-icbm-program-lockheed-out\/\" target=\"_blank\">each were awarded contracts in 2017 <\/a>for the technology-maturation and risk-reduction phase of the program, and Roper confirmed Thursday that Northrop continues work under that contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Boeing declined to move forward in the competition due to what it perceived as an unfair advantage in Northrop\u2019s purchase of Orbital ATK \u2014 now Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems \u2014 which is one of only two solid-fuel rocket motor manufacturers in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GBSD is set to replace the Minuteman III ICBMs in the mid 2020s. The Pentagon\u2019s top acquisition official, Ellen Lord, has said there is \u201cno margin\u201d to do another service life extension for the Minuteman III, which was fielded in the 1960s and has gone through only minimal upgrades over its 50 years of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roper is pleased with the progress Northrop is making on GBSD so far, particularly its use of high-fidelity models that can simulate the assembly, performance and maintenance of the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modernizing the United States\u2019 nuclear triad \u2014 its ICBMs, bombers and ballistic missile submarines \u2014 has been the military\u2019s top acquisition for almost a decade. But while Roper acknowledged that the Defense Department\u2019s top-line budget could remain stagnant or even decrease in the aftermath of the new coronavirus pandemic, he doesn\u2019t expect it to have an impact on nuclear modernization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the budget comes down, there will be more tough choices ahead,\u201d he said. \u201cMy worry \u2014 concern \u2014 is less about any program in the nuclear triad.
