{"id":18478,"date":"2021-01-11T23:28:55","date_gmt":"2021-01-11T23:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/01\/11\/us-navy-rolls-out-new-strategy-for-expanding-arctic-operations\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:45:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:45:42","slug":"us-navy-rolls-out-new-strategy-for-expanding-arctic-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/surface-navy-association\/2021\/01\/11\/us-navy-rolls-out-new-strategy-for-expanding-arctic-operations\/","title":{"rendered":"US Navy rolls out new strategy for expanding Arctic operations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JUNEAU, Alaska \u2014 The U.S. Department of the Navy released details of a new strategy for operations in the Arctic as competition for resources among nations increases in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of Alaska\u2019s congressional delegation have expressed support for the increased focus on the Arctic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.juneauempire.com\/news\/elected-officials-welcome-navys-new-arctic-strategy\/\" target=_blank>the Juneau Empire reported<\/a>  Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy statement titled \u201cA Blue Arctic\u201d provides an outline of planned operational changes for the military\u2019s sea services in and around Alaska, including the Navy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2020\/06\/09\/trump-memo-demands-new-fleet-of-arctic-icebreakers-to-be-ready-by-2029\/\" target=_blank>Coast Guard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/flashpoints\/2020\/03\/11\/major-arctic-exercise-canceled-over-coronavirus-fears\/\" target=_blank>Marine Corps<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The services will operate a full range of missions, adapt to Arctic operations and work with local and Indigenous communities to build regional security, the Navy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy highlighted the regional strategy as receding sea ice blamed on climate change makes mineral and biological resources more accessible to nations that can exploit them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trade routes are expected to open, allowing access to shipping lanes previously closed by sea ice. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/12\/26\/new-in-2021-will-you-be-getting-orders-to-an-arctic-base\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Suck-main.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New in 2021: Will you be getting orders to an Arctic base?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">New locations for the &quot;strategic Arctic ports&quot; would have to have capacity for equipment, fuel storage and defense systems and be linked by roads to airports that can support military aircraft.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. and China have invested in expanded icebreaker fleets to support northern operations, while Russia has expended vast amounts of resources to modernize its northern fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe coming decades will witness significant changes to the Arctic Region,\u201d the strategy statement said. \u201cEncompassing about six percent of the global surface, a Blue Arctic will have a disproportionate impact on the global economy given its abundance of natural resources and strategic location.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican U.S. Rep. Don Young of Alaska said in a statement that the U.S. must ensure its waters are navigable and the military has the necessary equipment and training \u201cto keep the peace in a rapidly evolving climate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must remember that the United States is not the only country working to pursue new opportunities in the Arctic \u2014 our adversaries are as well,\u201d Young said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican U.S. Sen.
