{"id":18640,"date":"2021-04-14T14:32:03","date_gmt":"2021-04-14T14:32:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/04\/14\/biden-admin-moving-ahead-with-uae-f-35-drone-sales-for-now\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:44:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:44:16","slug":"biden-admin-moving-ahead-with-uae-f-35-drone-sales-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/mideast-africa\/2021\/04\/14\/biden-admin-moving-ahead-with-uae-f-35-drone-sales-for-now\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden admin moving ahead with UAE F-35, drone sales for now"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. State Department is moving forward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/mideast-africa\/2020\/11\/10\/uae-purchase-of-f-35-mq-9-officially-cleared-by-state-department\/\" target=_blank>with the sale<\/a> of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters and MQ-9 drones to the United Arab Emirates, a decision which will now face a legal challenge from a nonprofit seeking to halt the weapons agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At stake is an arms package <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/mideast-africa\/2021\/01\/20\/just-hours-before-bidens-inauguration-the-uae-and-us-come-to-a-deal-on-f-35-sales\/\" target=_blank>approved in the waning days<\/a> of the Trump administration, which includes 50 F-35s,18 MQ\u20139B Reapers, as well as thousands of munitions and hundreds of missiles. The total sale comes with an estimated $23 billion price tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December, the New York Center for Foreign Policy Affairs, or NYCFPA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/01\/12\/lawsuit-threatens-23b-weapons-sale-to-uae\/\" target=_blank>filled a legal claim<\/a> that the Trump administration failed to provide a reasonable explanation for its decision to sell F-35 fighter jets and other weapons to the UAE, which would place it in breach of the Administrative Procedure Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/2021\/01\/27\/biden-admin-hits-pause-on-trump-foreign-weapon-sales-launches-review\/\" target=_blank>announced a blanket review<\/a> of all recent arms sales cleared by the Trump administration. While it notably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/mideast-africa\/2021\/02\/05\/boeing-raytheon-missile-sales-to-saudi-arabia-canceled-by-biden-administration\/\" target=_blank>froze a pair of weapons deals<\/a> for Saudi Arabia, the administration had never put in place a hard freeze on the UAE equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A State Department spokesman said in a statement that \u201cthe Administration intends to move forward with these proposed defense sales to the UAE, even as we continue reviewing details and consulting with Emirati officials to ensure we have developed mutual understandings with respect to Emirati obligations before, during, and after delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Tuesday statement, the NYCFPA said that as a result of the Biden administration deciding not to halt the sales, it will file an amended complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A December effort to derail the weapons sale in the Senate failed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2020\/12\/09\/amid-veto-threat-senate-rejects-ban-on-trumps-big-uae-arms-sale\/\">largely along party lines<\/a>. This week\u2019s decision by the State Department was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-emirates-f35-exclusive-idUSKBN2C032F\">reported<\/a> by Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the decision not to immediately cut off the UAE from arms sales may be a disappointment to advocacy groups concerned about the country\u2019s use of air power in the Yemen conflict, it does not mean the Biden administration has made a final, locked-in determination on the UAE\u2019s purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At any point between now and delivery of the weapons systems \u2014 which, for the F-35s, may take until 2025 or 2026 \u2014 the administration can slam on the brakes, as it can with all weapons deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProjected delivery dates on these sales, if eventually implemented, will be several years in the future.  Thus, we anticipate a robust and sustained dialogue with the UAE to any defense transfers [in order to] meet our mutual strategic objectives to build a stronger, interoperable, and more capable security partnership,\u201d the State Department spokesman said. \u201cWe will also continue to reinforce with the UAE and all recipients of U.S. defense articles and services that U.S.-origin defense
