{"id":18819,"date":"2021-03-09T20:07:11","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T20:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/03\/09\/strategic-long-range-cannon-effort-in-holding-pattern-ahead-of-tech-feasibility-report\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:46:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:46:37","slug":"strategic-long-range-cannon-effort-in-holding-pattern-ahead-of-tech-feasibility-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2021\/03\/09\/strategic-long-range-cannon-effort-in-holding-pattern-ahead-of-tech-feasibility-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Strategic Long-Range Cannon effort on hold ahead of report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 While some work on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2019\/10\/16\/strategic-long-range-cannon-preps-to-jump-its-first-tech-hurdle\/\" target=_blank>Strategic Long-Range Cannon<\/a> science and technology effort is ongoing, the Army is primarily waiting for the National Academy of Sciences to issue a report on the cannon\u2019s technical feasibility, Brig. Gen. John Rafferty, who is in charge of the service\u2019s long-range precision fires development, told Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/03\/20\/army-to-demonstrate-precision-strike-hypersonics-and-ramjet-capabilities-in-just-a-few-years\/\" target=_blank>Long-Range Precision Fires (LRPF)<\/a> is the top priority for the Army when it comes to developing a modernized force capable of facing off against near-peer adversaries such as China and Russia. The Strategic Long-Range Cannon could provide a means of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2018\/10\/07\/from-paladin-upgrades-to-a-1000-mile-cannon-army-artillery-aims-high-er-farther\/\" target=_blank>achieving 1,000 nautical mile artillery ranges<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The long-range cannon remains a top S&amp;T priority for the Army, Rafferty said in a recent interview, but the service has yet to make a decision on whether it should become a program of record and turned into a battlefield capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a big bet to see what is possible in those ranges that have an integrated cannon system and a way to shoot things that might be far less expensive,\u201d Rafferty said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fiscal year 2020 defense policy bill asked for the National Academy of Sciences to conduct a feasibility review on the cannon and that study is expected within the next few months, Rafferty said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that also gives an important data point for [Army Futures Command] and for the Army senior leaders to review as an independent assessment of the feasibility of this and then we\u2019ll be ready to continue after that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think we owe that to the senior leaders and AFC leaders to take advantage of a review by some of our premier governing bodies and to help solidify our approach because there are hard decisions to make. There are a lot of things happening in the strategic space that weren\u2019t going on when we first started this and it\u2019s no secret that the Department of Defense is conducting some portfolio reviews,\u201d Raffterty said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Army is waiting for the review, it hasn\u2019t stopped work it had already begun on the cannon. However, its goal of conducting a full-range demonstration of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/09\/08\/for-the-us-armys-fires-capability-2023-is-the-year-that-will-change-everything\/\" target=_blank> a strategic cannon prototype in 2023<\/a> no longer appears possible, Rafferty said. Yet, the Army still plans on demonstrating some capability of the system in that year, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe may not be able to do that anymore based on certain interruption in the work,\u201d Rafferty said, which in part can be tied to coronavirus pandemic-related slips, but is also related to funding availability and the pause to wait for the review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has two industry partners on board, which Rafferty said he could not name, to work on projectile development. The service is also working on the assembly of the carriage. \u201cThat was all scheduled work that had been paid for,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is still working to pass through \u201ctechnological gates,\u201d as Rafferty has called them in the past, which are helping to validate possible system design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have to work through the design of the test asset, so we can begin to work while the objective system is being built and then work through the propulsion and bring our industry partners on to work the business end of the system, and that\u2019s kind of where we are,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen you can just imagine from here, it\u2019s assembling the system, then scaling up everything. This is really starting small and validating the models that we\u2019ve been using and then scaling it up to the full propellant charge, full projectile design, to get it up to the range,\u201d
