{"id":19136,"date":"2021-04-30T20:22:52","date_gmt":"2021-04-30T20:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/04\/30\/unspent-border-wall-funds-will-be-rerouted-back-to-military-construction-projects\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:32:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:32:52","slug":"unspent-border-wall-funds-will-be-rerouted-back-to-military-construction-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/the-americas\/2021\/04\/30\/unspent-border-wall-funds-will-be-rerouted-back-to-military-construction-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Unspent border wall funds will be rerouted back to military construction projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon announced Friday that it would cancel all of the border construction projects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/02\/26\/pentagon-leaders-taken-to-task-for-funding-border-wall\/\" target=_blank>funded by the siphoning of money <\/a>destined to to build military schools, training facilities and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 100 projects were put on hold in late 2019 after then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper signed off on rerouting $3.6 billion from the Defense Department\u2019s military construction account. What\u2019s left will go back into those deferred projects, according to a Pentagon release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDoD has begun taking all necessary actions to cancel border barrier projects and to coordinate with interagency partners,\u201d spokesman Jamal Brown said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In total, the Pentagon put <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/02\/13\/why-this-could-be-the-last-year-the-pentagon-pays-for-the-border-wall\/\" target=_blank>$11 billion <\/a>of its budget into border barrier construction at the behest of then-President Donald Trump, whose declaration of emergency at the border allowed the re-allocation of counter-drug, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/09\/04\/heres-everything-the-pentagon-is-putting-on-hold-to-concentrate-on-building-the-border-wall\/\" target=_blank>military construction<\/a> and acquisition dollars for building contracts through the Army Corps of Engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision to tap military construction funds prompted multiple lawsuits, one of which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/10\/20\/scotus-to-rule-on-use-of-pentagon-funds-for-border-wall-but-money-already-spent\/\" target=_blank>Supreme Court agreed to hear last fall<\/a>, though it has not ruled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon his inauguration in January, President Joe Biden ended Trump\u2019s state of emergency, ordering DoD to review the projects it had funded and figure out how to cancel them and\/or reroute the money back into military spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spokespeople for the Pentagon and USACE did not immediately respond to a request for more information, including how much money was yet to be awarded, and whether funds could be recouped for awarded contracts that haven\u2019t been completely fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of October, according to USACE data, about $1.2 billion had been awarded to build 97 miles of wall. The most recent contract had been signed in January 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/03\/16\/border-deployments-could-be-extended-past-this-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Army-Guard-border-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Border deployments could be extended past this year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Homeland Security has asked for an extension to the mission.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though border wall construction has come to a halt, roughly 3,500 National Guardsmen from 22 states are still deploying to the area in support of Customs and Border Protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are slated to continue rotations until at least the end of September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHomeland Security, CBP, would like to continue DoD support,\u201d Air Force Gen.
