DeWolfe Miller, head all naval air forces, identified the increase of the mishaps in this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/partner-mco-archive.s3.amazonaws.com\/client_files\/1525378662.pdf\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">annual aviation safety message<\/a> to all aviation commanders and commanding officers on May 3. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/08\/navys-spike-in-aviation-mishaps-is-the-militarys-worst-up-82-percent\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6772428461_2d79437223_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy\u2019s spike in aviation mishaps is the military\u2019s worst, up 82 percent<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Class C accidents were the primary driver of a significant rise in Super Hornet mishaps.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also announced the requirement for every aviation unit to conduct their annual one-day safety standdown before the Memorial Day holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy Times obtained a copy of the message and Naval Air Forces confirmed its authenticity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the message, Miller called the rise in mishaps a \u201cdisturbing trend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince 2012, Class C [ground] aviation mishap rates have more than doubled \u2014 9.86 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours in FY12 steadily rising to conclude FY17 at 20.25,\u201d Miller wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlmost all Class C mishaps are preventable and a significant number of these occur during routine maintenance evolutions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller pointed to the combination of inexperience among aviation maintenance sailors and diminished flight hours across the board in naval aviation over the same time period as the most likely culprits, and noted that \u201cexperience and proper supervision\u201d are the best prevention methods for such mishaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But at least half of that formula for success is harder to come by in today\u2019s Navy, he said, and it\u2019s something that requires more attention to detail from commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStudies show that naval aviation\u2019s average E-5 has 1.5 years less experience as compared with 5 to 10 years ago,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe also know that with reduced flight hour execution, sailors receive fewer reps and sets performing their maintenance actions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miller called on units to recognize this lack of experience and ensure sailors are qualified and properly supervised during maintenance evolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTherefore, we need to ensure all evolutions, no matter how routine, procedurally follow the book and are performed by qualified sailors who are properly supervised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs an enterprise, we owe it to the American people to be good stewards of their money,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe also take great pride that we plan, brief, execute, and debrief every flight.
