how the Corps could shave about 6 pounds off your body armor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps is in the beginning stages of researching a new, lighter alternative ballistic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/08\/15\/the-corps-wants-lighter-body-armor-for-counterinsurgency-conflicts\/\" target=_blank>body armor<\/a> plate for counterinsurgency style conflicts that is nearly six pounds lighter than the legacy plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And on Thursday, it held an industry day with 16 companies vying to produce the Corps\u2019 latest body armor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to reduce battlefield fatigue and provide commanders with flexibility on the type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/07\/13\/marines-corps-looks-to-field-new-plate-carriers-and-body-armor\/\" target=_blank>armor protection<\/a> they decide to carry into combat, according to Nick Pierce, the armor team lead for Infantry Combat Equipment at Marine Corps Systems Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/06\/08\/as-enemy-body-armor-improves-marines-test-new-bullets\/\" target=_blank>Enhanced Small Arms Protective<\/a>, or ESAPI, have been highly effective in saving lives on the battlefield, they weigh nearly a combined 15 pounds, the Corps wants to shave that down to roughly 8.6 pounds for a medium-sized Marine, Pierce said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But don\u2019t expect the ESAPI to disappear just yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new plates are being crafted for low intensity threat environments like the counterinsurgency style wars that have embroiled American forces for nearly 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the new plates will \u201cdefeat a preponderance of threats\u201d in low intensity conflicts, the ESAPIs will still be \u201ccritical in some threat environments,\u201d Pierce explained to Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the changes to the new plates are still likely to be minimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps has decided to keep the same basic shape of the ESAPI, and there\u2019s unlikely to be any major changes in materials used to construct the armor plates<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe materials for plates haven\u2019t had a big tech leap,\u201d Pierce said. \u201cA lot of people are trying to find that next leap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army recently fielded a new plate, but its relatively of the same construction as the ESAPI, according to Pierce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere may be incremental changes \u2026 like the ceramic improving a little bit,\u201d Pierce explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Pierce said he didn\u2019t expect any major changes over the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are looking at some unique things,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of data and analysis is being pored over, to include assessments of the threat environment by the intelligence community for the construction of the new plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, the Corps has tested a prototype of the lighter plates and found Marines had nearly eight percent faster mobility over the heavier ESAPIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new plates \u2014 when combined with the new Plate Carrier Gen III system \u2014 will reduce a Marine\u2019s load burden by a total of eight to 10 pounds, according to Pierce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps expects to award a contract sometime in fiscal 2019 for the
