Gen. A.T. Williamson, director of manpower, plans and policy, in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe commandant right now is focusing on force design \u2026 the Marine Corps is making a concerted effort right now in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/26\/here-are-some-big-changes-that-may-be-coming-to-the-marine-corps\/\" target=\"_blank\">investing in several capabilities<\/a>,\u201d Williamson said at the Navy League\u2019s Sea-Air-Apace 2021 conference in National Harbor, Maryland. \u201cBut what the commandant has stated, and what we as Marines always know is, the primacy of that expeditionary force is the Marine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/08\/03\/heres-why-the-marine-corps-is-considering-returning-to-promotion-photos\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3410599.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Here\u2019s why the Marine Corps is considering returning to promotion photos<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Photo removal has led to decreased diversity, according to senior Marine and Navy leaders.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His remarks echo those made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/09\/11\/the-corps-cant-complete-its-missions-without-women-minorities-top-marine-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger<\/a> in 2020 at the Women in Defense Virtual Leadership Symposium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people \u201cthink that diversity \u2014 women, minorities \u2014 add\u201d to the Corps\u2019 success,\u201d Berger said then. But it goes beyond that. \u201cWe can actually not do our mission in the Department of Defense, in the Marine Corps, without the dedication of women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Williamson laid out three reasons the Corps needs to be a diverse institution, which he termed the ethical, practical and operational imperatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe American people need to know their military \u2026 reflects those they support and defend,\u201d Williamson said, so the \u201cethical imperative\u201d is simply to do the right thing in terms of inclusion and fairness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical imperative, he said, refers to the Corps\u2019 need to tap into a shrinking, but more diverse, pool of people in the country who qualify for the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want to leave any talent on the table,,\u201d the general said, \u201ceveryone is competing for the same talented pool of men and women. They are going to work somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, most important is the operational imperative, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When looking at the complex battlefields of the future, \u201cit is all about lethality and warfighting,\u201d Williamson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s challenging;, it is full of problem sets that one group \u2014 that one team \u2014 are not going to be able to solve alone,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to be able to open up the diversity of thought, of experience, of background, to try and attract people who are going to help us solve those very complex problems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, unconscious bias may play a role in unfairly forcing good Marines to leave the Corps or denying them opportunities to improve themselves, Williamson noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we see that a particular demographic or subgroup or element is not performing to standard or not performing as well as others, we ought to be intellectually curious enough to ask why, not just accept that and believe that that is going to fit a certain bias that we have,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some biases are not only good, but necessary, for the Marine Corps to thrive, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe all are slanted or have certain perceptions,\u201d he said. \u201cIn fact, in the Marine Corps, we expect Marines to have a bias towards action \u2026 we have a bias towards being disciplined\u2026 we are biased towards physical fitness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are negative biases, or there are biases that are misguided, misinformed or just flat out wrong,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps must identify how those negative biases affect the evaluations, promotions and opportunities given to Marines, to take the \u201cemotion\u201d out of those processes and give every Marine a fair chance to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the concept \u201cunconscious bias: is honestly taught to, and understood by, Marines, the Corps will be able to overcome the problems introduced by negative stereotypes that reduce diversity in the ranks, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But beyond just understanding what unconscious bias is, commanders need to implement policies and programs that actively counteract the negative biases that may derail some Marines\u2019 careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Historically, the Corps has introduced programs that looked good on evaluation paperwork, but too often failed to meet the goal of increasing diversity in the ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are a lot of actions that are going on in the space, but if it is not hitting our outcomes then it is just activity,\u201d Williamson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps is now introducing steps to measure how this \u201cactivity\u201d affects the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is difficult to hold accountable a commander or anyone for just activity, but it is very easy to hold them accountable when I give them an assigned mission, tell them what the expectation is, then give them the tools they need to be successful,\u201d Williamson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCommanders are given a lot of trust and confidence&gt; They are expected to positively affect their environment \u2026 but we also need to give them the tools,\u201d Williamson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps plans on developing and distributing what leaders are calling a \u201ccommander\u2019s tool kit\u201d to teach leaders how to improve diversity and help their Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once commanders receive those tools and training, they will be expected to meet the mission on diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter we help develop this, what we want to call a commander\u2019s tool kit, we can hold you accountable for establishing diverse, inclusive environments \u2026 so that everyone can perform and succeed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will lead to a Marine Corps that has a culture of inclusion and is positioned to maximize the abilities of every Marine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is about bringing in young men and women and making sure that everyone\u2019s gifts, talents and abilities are fully actualized,\u201d Williamson said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marine Brig.
