{"id":19904,"date":"2022-05-12T16:30:05","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T16:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/05\/12\/bases-get-electric-facelift-as-marines-deploy-smart-grids-electric-vehicles\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:32:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:32:55","slug":"bases-get-electric-facelift-as-marines-deploy-smart-grids-electric-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/modern-day-marine\/2022\/05\/12\/bases-get-electric-facelift-as-marines-deploy-smart-grids-electric-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Bases get \u2018electric facelift\u2019 as Marines deploy smart grids, electric vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 Marine installations from West Coast air stations to deep South depots are getting an electric facelift as the Corps ramps up its electric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2014\/09\/24\/driverless-vehicles-get-smarter-as-corps-gets-lighter\/\" target=\"_blank\">vehicle fleet <\/a>and base \u201csmart grids\u201d for powering the force at home stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following new executive orders to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/video\/2021\/07\/26\/the-armys-path-to-an-electric-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\">reduce <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/video\/2021\/07\/26\/the-armys-path-to-an-electric-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\">carbon fuel use<\/a> that would also make for resilient, blackout-proof power grids, the Corps is adding solar panel and renewable energy options with sophisticated software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/digital-show-dailies\/feindef\/2021\/11\/04\/general-dynamics-europe-team-dips-into-remote-controlled-vehicles-ground-robots\/?contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8&#038;contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Funmanned%22%2C%22from%22%3A5%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D\" target=\"_blank\">power management<\/a> at installations such as its air stations, bases and depots in Miramar and Twentynine Palms, California; Yuma, Arizona; Parris Island, South Carolina and Albany, Georgia, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time the service is finding the \u201csweet spot\u201d for its nontactical electric vehicle fleet, one official over that program said Tuesday at the 2022 Modern Day Marine exposition in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that work is slightly more involved than simply swapping out some charging stations and buying a few Teslas.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2021\/03\/24\/the-pentagon-could-help-improve-resilience-of-the-us-electric-grid\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">The Pentagon could improve America&#039;s electrical grid<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service runs detailed energy resilience readiness exercises at various levels to blackout-proof the location\u2019s power, Walter Ludwig, director of public works for Marine Corps Installations Command, told the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They \u201ccan\u2019t put microgrids in place\u201d regardless of power supply \u2015 solar, geothermal or simply diesel generators \u2015 without testing those assets, Ludwig said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And how are they doing that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the framework of energy resilience and readiness exercises that his team runs on all of these systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4687\" height=\"3125\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MC-Miramar-microgrid.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42075\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MC-Miramar-microgrid.jpg.jpg 4687w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MC-Miramar-microgrid.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MC-Miramar-microgrid.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MC-Miramar-microgrid.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MC-Miramar-microgrid.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MC-Miramar-microgrid.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1365 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4687px) 100vw, 4687px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Congressman Mike Levin, the representative for California\u2019s 49th Congressional District, and Col. Marcin Platek\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don\u2019t want to simply flip a switch knocking out power to the base only to find out the hospital\u2019s generators weren\u2019t running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last, the team runs a \u201cblack start\u201d exercise, which swaps off power sources from the infrastructure grid to backup sources or alternative means across an area. And, admittedly, some fell into disuse and need to be relocated for easier access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group is experimenting not only with stationary, tied in systems but also with mobile charging stations. That way, base commanders and vehicle fleet managers can move stations to where they\u2019re needed most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are excited to have the Beam chargers on Quantico for the means of having the capability to support electric vehicles,\u201d said Master Gunnery Sergeant Ramiro Quintero, transportation branch chief at Quantico, Virginia, in a January press release. \u201cKnowing that we\u2019re able to support the [EV] effort is enough for the mission and for what we do and how we support that aboard the base.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having mobile stations, not only on base but at other sites where military electric vehicles may travel, helps override another problem: driver fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studies showed Gough and his team that some electric vehicle users were reluctant to use the platforms, fearing they\u2019d reach the edge of the range and not have enough charge to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other studies showed that adding stations on the periphery of the route increased driver use of electric vehicles, even when they didn\u2019t use the extended charging stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just knowing they were there was enough to inspire confidence in the vehicles, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat it does for us, it allows us to quickly emplace, and we have 21 chargers in place now at 12 locations, quickly emplace and supply equipment for vehicles now and ones that are coming,\u201d Gough said. \u201cIt also allows us the ability to move that charger around. So, we\u2019ll drop that charger in a parking lot today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gough said updating the electric vehicle fleet is giving the Corps a way to look hard at how it is using nontactical vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is monitoring the black boxes inside electric vehicles to analyze regularly how fleets are using the vehicles. That helps planners decide whether they need a certain number of vehicles, electric or gas-powered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though the directive is there, just like the civilian world, there are supply chain issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortages of key components have meant civilian vehicle manufacturers canceling orders or prioritizing more lucrative
