{"id":19906,"date":"2021-05-10T19:56:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T19:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/05\/10\/marines-eye-tactical-resupply-drone-prototypes\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:23:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:23:29","slug":"marines-eye-tactical-resupply-drone-prototypes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/unmanned\/2021\/05\/10\/marines-eye-tactical-resupply-drone-prototypes\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines eye tactical resupply drone prototypes"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=a5de646e-8ec0-4629-b9b3-d5f90eafec3f\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-a5de646e-8ec0-4629-b9b3-d5f90eafec3f.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Military Times&#8217; Todd South looks goes to Periscope Aviation&#8217;s headquarters for a look at where heavy-lift drone technology is headed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines are one step closer to finding ways to transport vital supplies to Marines on the move <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/26\/check-out-the-massive-do-it-all-drone-that-marines-could-choose-as-their-wingman\/\" target=\"_blank\">via drones<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2020, the Corps sought prototype drones that would be able to carry a 60 pound payload on a 20 km roundtrip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After evaluations at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, the Corps picked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chartisfed.com\/post\/periscope-aviation-wins-supply-delivery-contract\" target=\"_blank\">Periscope Aviation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.survice.com\/media\/news\/survice-malloy-team-wins-us-navy-uas-prize-challenge\" target=\"_blank\">Malloy Aeronautics<\/a> to build competing drones under the Tactical Resupply Unmanned Aircraft System program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program is basically the Marines Corps\u2019 way of seeing what\u2019s available from industry for smaller payload, shorter range resupply that could be scaled up quickly for larger payloads at farther distances with the right technology investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps Times recently visited the Leesburg, Virginia, headquarters of Periscope Aviation to view a demonstration of their prototype and talk with Periscope CEO Nick McCarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/03\/21\/hive-like-drone-pack-could-resupply-far-flung-marines-with-a-push-of-a-button\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"148\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/hive.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Hive-like \u2018drone pack\u2019 could resupply far-flung Marines with a push of a button<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The system could deliver tiny amounts of gear in waves, from batteries, to first aid, to ammunition or food.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the 2020 selection, the competitors have delivered an advanced version of the original model. Periscope\u2019s MK4-R was its 2020 submission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom there, the Marine Corps wanted to lift more weight, so we developed the MK4-RX,\u201d McCarter said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early 2021, the company delivered the MK4-RX prototype, which can carry 60 pounds on a 40 km roundtrip and 90 pounds on a 20 km roundtrip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Company officials noted they\u2019ve done test lifts with the drone up to 135 pounds and fly a 20 km round trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McCarter explained that part of the way they\u2019re able to do that work is through a series of patents on their more streamlined design that allows the drone to travel through the air with less resistance. They also focus on use 20 percent thrust at takeoff as compared to industry competitors which can often use as much as 70 percent thrust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That reduced thrust still allows for takeoff but doesn\u2019t strain battery life, which translates to longer flight duration once airborne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe achieve this by using over-spec\u2019d motors and props couple with extreme light weight airframes,\u201d company officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Marines are still evaluating the most recent prototypes, McCarter said his company\u2019s next effort will look to the 400 pound to 500 pound payload at the same ranges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has designed the device with the field in mind. The drone breaks down into six boxes which can all fit on an all-terrain vehicle such as the Corps\u2019 Polaris MRZR. Set up and tear down can be accomplished in under five minutes and a series of push-pull locking pins clicks it together, no tools required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can fly in autonomous or semi-autonomous modes through simple tablet computer displays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhich means if you can pick waypoints on a map, you can fly this drone,\u201d McCarter said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed the niche that a drone like this is filling. While this project is for resupply, the same drone could be used for communications relays or intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re made in a kind of in-between space that is more durable than the hobby drones flown for recreation or photography and the high-end, high-altitude, multimillion dollar drones used for long-range reconnaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverything we build is designed around what that customer wants to do,\u201d McCarter said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Periscope falls within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chartisfed.com\/periscope-aviation\" target=\"_blank\">Chartis Federal<\/a>, a company that began working with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in 2008 to solve a communications problem agents were experiencing in rough terrain at the U.S.-Mexico border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agents would be cut off from communications in deeper valleys or lower areas of steep cliffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chartis was able to use tethered drones over those spots to run as kind of mobile communications towers to relay signals and give agents communications in previously no-go areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just like Amazon wants to use drones to drop off
