{"id":19927,"date":"2021-07-26T16:25:56","date_gmt":"2021-07-26T16:25:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/07\/26\/marine-f-35cs-in-this-squadron-are-ready-for-combat-in-another-fighter-jet-first\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:36:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:36:41","slug":"marine-f-35cs-in-this-squadron-are-ready-for-combat-in-another-fighter-jet-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2021\/07\/26\/marine-f-35cs-in-this-squadron-are-ready-for-combat-in-another-fighter-jet-first\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine F-35Cs in this squadron are ready for combat in another fighter jet first"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eighteen months after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3rdmaw.marines.mil\/News\/News-Article-Display\/Article\/2493674\/vikings-welcome-fifth-generation-strike-fighter-to-arsenal\/\" target=\"_blank\">receiving <\/a>its first fifth-generation jet fighter, the F-35C Lightning II, a California-based squadron is ready for a carrier deployment and full combat operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The squadron was the first to achieve that status among not only Marine aviators but aviation units for all the services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron, VMFA 314, Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, at Miramar, California, reached that pivotal mark in early July, according to a news <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/400214\/first-usmc-f-35c-squadron-declares-full-operational-capability\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey will deploy as part of a Carrier Strike Group next year,\u201d said Maj. Gen. Christopher Mahoney, 3rd MAW commanding general, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/400214\/first-usmc-f-35c-squadron-declares-full-operational-capability\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/12\/06\/the-marine-corps-first-f-35c-squadron-is-ready-to-deploy-on-carriers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6434825.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine Corps\u2019 first F-35C squadron ready to deploy on carriers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Its larger wings and stronger landing gear make it better suited for the catapult launches and arrestments used on carriers, and its wingtips fold for better storage on deck.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This unit is on the precipice of major changes sweeping all of Marine Corps aviation following the Marine Corps Force Design 2030 and specifically the service\u2019s 2019 aviation plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFOC for the Black Knights is yet another step forward in achieving Force Design objectives. The Black Knights are ready \u2014 3rd MAW is ready,\u201d Mahoney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December 2020, VMFA-314 had its jets at initial operating capability, meaning the aircraft met Marine Corps standards for the number of trained Marines, mission-ready aircraft and trained pilots to deploy, if needed, according to a previous press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The squadron formerly flew and maintained the F\/A-18 Super Hornet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-35C is designed specifically for carrier takeoff. With larger wings and stronger landing gear than the F-35B variant, it is optimized to withstand the catapult launches and arrestments needed for carrier launch and landings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newer jet also has greater range, holding more fuel than most other single-seat jets, with 20,000 pounds of internal fuel storage available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines have been working with the F-35B, a short runway, vertical takeoff variant in the F-35 family, for years, but this is the first carrier-specific F-35 unit to reach this status so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both the Air Force and Navy have its own measures for qualifying fully combat-ready, and due to larger jet fleets and basing measures have not yet met the fully operational capability mark set for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps has budget goals of buying 67 F-35s in addition to the undisclosed number already in the fleet, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2018\/09\/27\/combat-debut-marines-f-35b-strikes-taliban-target-afghanistan.html\" target=\"_blank\">Military.com<\/a>. The Navy is aiming for 273 carrier-capable F35Cs and the Air Force has a whopping 1,763 in its purchase plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3rdmaw.marines.mil\/News\/News-Article-Display\/Article\/2570105\/yuma-f-35b-pilots-go-off-roading\/\" target=\"_blank\">F-35B <\/a>also first reached initial operational capability with a Marine unit back in 2015. It was first flown in combat off the amphibious assault ship Essex in 2018 during a strike in Afghanistan, also by Marines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The squadron is slated
