When they get back, they\u2019ll face a short window to pass a host of appropriations measures to stave off another partial government shutdown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes finishing up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/06\/18\/five-debates-lawmakers-still-need-to-settle-in-the-defense-authorization-bill\/\" target=_blank>the annual defense policy measure<\/a> a top priority for defense lawmakers. A House and Senate conference committee has been working on a compromise measure for the past few weeks, and is hopeful they are close to a deal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/05\/10\/house-panel-adopts-716-billion-defense-authorization-plan\/\" target=_blank>defense authorization bill<\/a> has been passed by Congress for 57 consecutive years, but the work hasn\u2019t been finalized before the start of the new fiscal year in a decade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finishing it well before the November mid-term elections would give incumbent lawmakers from both parties a chance to tell votes how they helped set part of the military budget early, despite increasing political divisions in Washington. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<strong>Tuesday, July 24<\/strong>\n<br>House Veterans&#8217; Affairs \u2014 10 a.m. \u2014 334 Cannon\n<br>\n<i>Appeals reform<\/i>\n<br>The committee will hear from department officials on progress\nimplementing new appeals reform measures approved by Congress\nlast year.\n<br>\n<br>House Transportation \u2014 10 a.m. \u2014 2167 Rayburn\n<br>\n<i>Coast Guard missions<\/i>\n<br>Service officials will testify before the committee on Coast\nGuard acquisition programs and mission balance.\n<br>\n<br>House Homeland Security \u2014 2 p.m. \u2014 Visitors Center H-210\n<br>\n<i>National Guard border deployments<\/i>\n<br>Committee members will hear from Guard and border patrol officials\non the missions currently being conducted by Guard personnel\nalong the U.S. southern border.\n<br>\n<br>House Foreign Affairs \u2014 2 p.m. \u2014 2172 Rayburn\n<br>\n<i>Egypt<\/i>\n<br>Outside experts will testify before the committee on Egyptian\nsecurity and human rights issues.\n<br>\n<br>Senate Foreign Relations \u2014 2:30 p.m. \u2014 419 Dirksen\n<br>\n<i>China<\/i>\n<br>Outside experts will testify before the committee on Chinese\neconomic coercion and the implications for U.S. strategy.\n<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Wednesday, July 25<\/strong>\n<br>\n<br>Senate Intelligence \u2014 9:30 a.m. \u2014 216 Hart\n<br>\n<i>Nominations<\/i>\n<br>The committee will consider the nominations of retired Vice\nAdm.
