Joe Manchin said Tuesday that he hasn\u2019t made a decision on Colin Kahl\u2019s nomination after speaking with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, leaving President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/transition\/2020\/12\/30\/biden-selects-hicks-kahl-for-top-dod-roles\/\" target=_blank>pick<\/a> for undersecretary of defense for policy stuck in limbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have reached out to Republicans who he\u2019s worked with and who he\u2019s worked under. I wanted to get everybody\u2019s input. So, I\u2019m gathering all that information. I have not made a final decision,\u201d Manchin, D-W.Va., told Fox News\u2019 Bret Baier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manchin\u2019s vote on the Senate Armed Services Committee may be pivotal to advancing Kahl\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2021\/03\/04\/what-the-pentagons-top-policy-nominee-thinks-about-nukes-iran-and-other-priorities\/\" target=_blank>nomination to the Senate floor<\/a>. Several Republicans have said they would oppose Kahl, citing what they view as partisan social media activity and his vocal support for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal \u2015 and if panel Republicans vote as a bloc, Kahl will need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2021\/02\/24\/reed-downplays-gop-resistance-to-dod-policy-pick\/\" target=_blank>Democrats<\/a> to unify behind him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Manchin joined Republican opposition to Neera Tanden as the nominee for Biden\u2019s budget director, citing her past tweets criticizing politicians across the spectrum, the White House dropped Tanden\u2019s nomination. Manchin was also one of four Democrats to vote against the Iran nuclear deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Austin, meanwhile, has urged the Senate to hold a vote to confirm Kahl, according to Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby. Kahl was previously a senior adviser to President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Biden, as well as deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East from 2009 to 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2021\/03\/04\/republicans-slam-pentagon-nominee-colin-kahl-over-tweets-iran-nuclear-deal\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-139448343.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Republicans slam Pentagon nominee Colin Kahl over tweets, Iran nuclear deal<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The nominee for the Pentagon\u2019s top policy job faced sharp questioning over his harsh criticism of Republicans on social media.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, Manchin said Kahl\u2019s \u201ctweeting is nowhere near what Neera Tanden\u2019s was.\u201d Manchin expressed mixed feelings about one 2019 tweet from Kahl \u2015 after President Donald Trump abruptly withdrew U.S. troops from Syria, that Republicans defending him \u201cdebase themselves at the alter of Trump &#8211; they are the party of ethnic cleansing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help himself decide, Manchin said he had spoken with Kahl, Austin and former Defense Secretary Bob Gates, a Republican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are good people, and you want to get all the inputs you can,\u201d Manchin said. \u201cI want to know the demeanor of that person. I want to know the temperance of that person. I want to get the feel of who that person is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During Kahl\u2019s SASC confirmation hearing last week, he faced sharp questions from Republicans and apologized for his \u201csometimes disrespectful\u201d remarks on social media, pledging to serve in a nonpartisan fashion if confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, West Virginia Republican Sen. Shelly Moore Capito became the first Republican outside the SASC to come out against Kahl, retweeting a <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/R8Fyc6ogUu?amp=1\" target=_blank>Wall Street Journal editorial<\/a> opposed to his confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe world\u2019s largest state sponsor of terrorism does not deserve to be coddled, and the disastrous Iran nuclear deal should be left in the past,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cWe need a strong, not soft, stance when it comes to Iran.
