{"id":20214,"date":"2016-02-19T18:48:29","date_gmt":"2016-02-19T18:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2016\/02\/19\/india-us-discuss-cooperation-in-carrier-technology\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:48:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:48:49","slug":"india-us-discuss-cooperation-in-carrier-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2016\/02\/19\/india-us-discuss-cooperation-in-carrier-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"India, US Discuss Cooperation in Carrier Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEW DELHI \u2014 India and the US discussed the possibility of cooperation in carrier technology this week, but sources in India&#8217;s Ministry\u00a0of Defence (MoD) said no agreement was reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussion took place from Feb.\u00a015-18 in a second meeting of the\u00a0Joint Working Group on Aircraft Carrier Technology Co-operation (JWGACTC), part of the Indo-US Defense Trade and Technology Initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Various aspects of cooperation in the field of aircraft carrier technology were discussed and a joint statement signed,&#8221;\u00a0the MoD said in a statement\u00a0Feb.19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">India\u00a0is\u00a0exploring the\u00a0possibility\u00a0of US cooperation in\u00a0building a second\u00a0indigenous\u00a0aircraft carrier\u00a0(IAC-2), INS Vishal, which\u00a0is\u00a0still on the drawing board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0Indian Navy has kept\u00a0the option open for use\u00a0of an Electromagnetic\u00a0Aircraft Launch System\u00a0(EMALS), regarded as an advanced system,\u00a0which the\u00a0US\u00a0offered\u00a0to India for IAC-2\u00a0during US\u00a0President Barack Obama&#8217;s visit to India\u00a0in January 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMALS<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> system<\/span>\u00a0is\u00a0expected\u00a0to\u00a0be more versatile,\u00a0allowing a\u00a0variety of aircraft to be launched with the same\u00a0system, which\u00a0could include\u00a0medium-\u00a0and light-weight aircraft\u00a0and India&#8217;s\u00a0homegrown Light\u00a0Combat\u00a0Aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Planned to carry\u00a0more than 50 fighter jets and helicopters, IAC-2 will be built in India.\u00a0The Indian Navy\u00a0is deciding whether\u00a0IAC-2 will have a\u00a0conventional or nuclear propulsion system.
