Transportation to Milan from Rome for Defense News was provided by Leonardo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CEO Alessandro Profumo said the performance would kick in after a \u201cconsolidation\u201d year in 2018, but the numbers failed to impress analysts, who triggered a sharp fall in the firm\u2019s share price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonardo\u2019s share price previously tumbled by one-fifth in November when the firm cut its short-term forecast amid concerns about performance in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/01\/09\/court-acquits-ex-leonardo-execs-in-helicopter-bribery-case\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" style=\"\" target=\"_blank\">helicopter division<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, the firm reduced its new order forecast for 2017 to \u20ac12 billion, ahead of the full results announcement due this March.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2018\/01\/12\/leonardo-to-head-eu-research-program-on-unmanned-naval-systems\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"131\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/body_Foto_4_da_usare_per_sliderone_r.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Leonardo to head EU research program on unmanned naval systems<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The first research project to be carried out by the European Union\u2019s new defense fund will cover unmanned naval systems and be led by Italy\u2019s Leonardo, the firm said Friday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, officials cut the forecast again to between \u20ac11.3 billion and \u20ac11.7 billion, stating a predicted order for new C-27J tactical transport aircraft had slipped and would not be closed by the end of the financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are awaiting administrative approval, we are not worried about it,\u201d said Profumo, who was appointed last April. The firm has declined to identify the buyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonardo predicted Tuesday that the new order book would hit \u20ac12.5-13 billion in 2018. Revenues will be \u20ac11.5-12 billion next year, the same predicted for 2017, the company predicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked about the share slide, Profumo said analysts had been disappointed by projections for 2018, but stressed he was focusing on the long-term ambitions of the firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Profumo and the helicopter division\u2019s chief, Gian Piero Cutillo, took time during the presentation to explain what went wrong at the division in 2017, which Profumo called a \u201cdisappointing\u201d year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They pinned the problem on engineers trying to carry out late configuration changes on the new civil AW169 helicopter, which has received about 120 orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere were far too many late-stage configuration changes made by commercial teams chasing sales in a difficult market,\u201d Profumo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA simple new rule: You cannot change configurations once a helicopter is on the final assembly line,\u201d Cutillo noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The admission came 10 months after the firm said it had the AW169 situation in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 2017\u2019s end-of-year results presentation, held by Profumo\u2019s predecessor Mauro Moretti, the firm said \u201cearlier production issues with the new AW169 (are) now resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Profumo said Tuesday there were no \u201cstructural problems\u201d at the division, only \u201cself inflicted problems.\u201d The shrinking of the helicopter market by 45 percent between 2013 and 2016 did not help, the managers added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, in the defense helicopter market, Leonardo had been \u201cineffective in tender processes and major campaigns,\u201d the firm admitted in its presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cutillo was moved by Profumo to head up the helicopter division in October from his previous job as chief financial officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is the right person to manage the situation,\u201d Profumo said. The firm now expects a \u201cfull recovery\u201d in the market, he added, and it believes the helicopter division will return to double digit profitability by 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking ahead, Profumo said he had no intention of selling Leonardo\u2019s stake in European missiles house MBDA, an option considered by management before he took over last April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI like MBDA, I have no intention of selling it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He suggested the firm would push on with plans to develop a new, 100-seater version of the ATR aircraft it builds with Airbus. Last year, Moretti said the new plane could be sold in passenger, cargo or military transport configuration, the latter acting as replacement for the C-27J tactical transport aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief Commercial Officer Lorenzo Mariani confirmed Leonardo\u2019s plans to beef up its global sales effort, stating it would open 10 new offices in 2018-2019 and double
