It has ramped up its role in European training in the last 10 years, growing from the four A-10s that trained out of Estonia in 2013 to 10 in 2017. A trip planned for 2020 was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe A-10 Thunderbolt II provides a unique, established and enduring close air support capability to the joint force,\u201d U.S. Air Forces in Europe spokesperson Capt. Daniel de La F\u00e9 said. \u201cHosting the Warthog in Europe provides those training touchpoints with our allies and partners, which provides value to the NATO coalition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 170 American airmen were part of more than 200 training sorties in 10 countries throughout May, said Capt. Ben Hughes, 175th Wing spokesperson. The event brought together 9,000 service members from 17 countries, including roughly 2,700 American airmen and soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFour A-10s and approximately 50 airmen operated out of Andoya Air Base in Norway, which is within the Arctic Circle,\u201d Hughes wrote. Taylor Bye&#039;s courage and cool in a mid-flight crisis earned her the Air Combat Command\u2019s Airmanship Award in a May 5 ceremony at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Defender Europe, all 10 Warthogs came together in Latvia and were joined by another 60 or so Maryland guardsmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four A-10s flew to Amari Air Base in Estonia, then out of Saaremaa, an island off the west coast of Estonia in the Baltic Sea. The other six planes remained at Lievarde Air Base in Latvia and flew training missions across Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Estonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of one day, C-17s ferried airmen and equipment from Estonia to Lithuania so troops could quickly arm and refuel their A-10s, Hughes said. Then they packed up and returned to Latvia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Warthogs also supported a live-fire test of the HIMARS precision rocket system \u2014 which the United States recently supplied to Ukraine \u2014 and an amphibious Marine Corps landing on Saaremaa. But Europe poses much different combat scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn Afghanistan and Iraq, we were conducting operations where the aircraft came in and performed the mission, but \u2026 they didn\u2019t need [suppression and destruction of enemy air defenses] aircraft, they didn\u2019t need fighter escorts,\u201d said Daniel Norton, a military systems analyst with Rand Corp., the federally funded think tank. \u201cIn the European theater, I imagine that you\u2019d do a lot more force packaging along the lines of what we did in Desert Storm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norton sees the deployment as a chance to explore what tactics and techniques work best with NATO allies, not as a signal to Russia or a demonstration of the A-10\u2032s prowess in a potential European conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/video\/2022\/04\/11\/budget-analysis-is-the-a-10-warthog-still-viable\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-7f13c4e3-fb7c-48bf-9700-565248cde229.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Budget analysis: Is the A-10 Warthog still viable?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Defense News&#039; Joe Gould digs into the 2023 budget request with Todd Harrison of CSIS and Mackenzie Eaglen of the American Enterprise Institute.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is an A-10, but the procedures for calling in fires from an F-35, or an F-22, or a bomber, or something else, will have quite a bit of overlap,\u201d he said. \u201cThe training is valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite arguments that the Warthog could be proving its utility if war spills over into NATO member countries, Norton said there\u2019s no guarantee that Russia wouldn\u2019t learn from its mistakes in Ukraine. Then the realities of more sophisticated modern warfare would set in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a 1970s aircraft,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not stealthy. It wasn\u2019t designed for these kinds of air defense environments.
