(Staff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. \u2014 Lockheed Martin\u2019s unmanned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/federal-budget\/2018\/02\/12\/navy-wants-to-add-sailors-jets-and-an-extra-ship-in-2019\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">MQ-25 tanker drone<\/a> proposal for the Navy will incorporate some familiar equipment, including the General Electric F404 turbofan engine that powers the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/navy-league\/2018\/04\/09\/how-stealthy-is-boeings-new-super-hornet\/?utm_source=RC+Defense+Morning+Recon&amp;utm_campaign=0014d5d1be-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_04_08&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_694f73a8dc-0014d5d1be-84346877\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Super Hornet<\/a> and the F-35C landing gear made by United Technologies Corp., company executives announced Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Triumph Aerostructures, which will manufacture the internal structure of the drone, rounds out the list of suppliers disclosed by Rob Weiss, outgoing head of Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, and Jeff Babione, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2018\/03\/01\/lockheed-names-new-program-leaders-for-f-35-skunk-works\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">who will take over Skunk Works this summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done a great job of pulling together a real proven set of aerospace technology providers,\u201d Babione told reporters during a briefing at the Navy League\u2019s Sea Air Space conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Triumph has manufactured structures for a wide range of aircraft including Northrop Grumman\u2019s E-2D Hawkeye, the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey and Lockheed\u2019s F-35 joint strike fighter, he said. Meanwhile UTC\u2019s landing gear has proven its utility in a \u201cdifficult use environment,\u201d and the F404 has clocked more than 13 million flight hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat engine is already on the carrier and they would have everything they would need to support the MQ-25, no innovation required \u2014 extremely important in reducing the risk and overall cost,\u201d Babione said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Lockheed\u2019s MQ-25 offering is re-using equipment from legacy airframes, Skunk Works is arguably taken the most risk in its design, putting out a tanker drone concept that doesn\u2019t look much like its competitors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one, the company ditched its previous design after the Navy ended its program for an surveillance and strike drone and began an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/2016\/08\/24\/top-navy-admiral-new-stingray-drone-will-be-a-tanker\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">effort to develop an unmanned aerial refueling asset<\/a>, whereas competitors General Atomics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2018\/03\/16\/is-boeing-working-on-a-second-mq-25-drone-prototype\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Boeing <\/a>heavily reused their MQ-25 designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps even more noticeably, Lockheed is the only competitor offering a flying wing aircraft after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/10\/25\/northrop-pulls-out-of-mq-25-drone-competition\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Northrop Grumman dropped out of the competition last year<\/a>. Both General Atomics and Boeing have notably put forward wing-body-tail aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe did a number of trade studies,\u201d but found its previous design \u201cwas a compromise, as frankly most derivatives end up being,\u201d explained Weiss. (Lockheed Martin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed liked the higher range and low fuel consumption of a flying wing design, Weiss said. Another Lockheed official on the program added that most tankers store fuel in its wings, \u201cbut all we are is a wing,\u201d potentially allowing it to carry more fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another big departure from its competitors is Lockheed\u2019s sales approach, which has showcased the aircraft\u2019s room to grow into other applications, including a penetrating strike mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A video revealed during the briefing Monday showed Lockheed\u2019s MQ-25 launching two AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapons from the hard points that would usually carry its drop tank and refueling pod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, while the MQ-25 is not a stealth aircraft, it\u2019s a \u201ca plane form that would lend itself to a low observable design,\u201d Weiss said, and could be modified to be LO in the future if the Navy wishes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy plans to pick an MQ-25 vendor this summer, and will award a contract for the four engineering and manufacturing development aircraft, with an option for three more test assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/12\/19\/boeing-offers-sneak-peek-of-mq-25-tanker-drone\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Boeing<\/a>, Skunk Works has not unveiled a prototype yet, but Weiss said he didn\u2019t believe there was a benefit to creating a flyable prototype before a contract award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are prepared to move into an accelerated program for the development phase,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Navy-required deck handling demo is coming up \u201cin the very near future,\u201d Weiss said, but he would not disclose whether Lockheed would use a surrogate aircraft during the tests except to note that the company
