{"id":20409,"date":"2017-12-19T14:10:24","date_gmt":"2017-12-19T14:10:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2017\/12\/19\/rolls-royce-local-firm-face-off-in-turkish-jet-engine-contest\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:50:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:50:07","slug":"rolls-royce-local-firm-face-off-in-turkish-jet-engine-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2017\/12\/19\/rolls-royce-local-firm-face-off-in-turkish-jet-engine-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"Rolls-Royce, local firm face off in Turkish jet engine contest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANKARA, Turkey \u2014 Rolls-Royce\u2019s European consortium is expected to face rivalry from a local manufacturer in a Turkish competition for the design, development and production of a jet engine for the TF-X, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2017\/11\/21\/turkey-sets-timetable-for-critical-phase-of-its-fighter-jet-program\/\">Turkish indigenous fighter aircraft<\/a> in the making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkish procurement officials confirmed the British company\u2019s participation in the bidding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are definitely in the picture,\u201d said one senior official familiar with the TF-X program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October 2015, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Turkey and Rolls-Royce on technological know-how and a production unit. Under the plan, Rolls-Royce will launch an advanced manufacturing and technology center in Turkey \u2014 the company\u2019s eighth such unit worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A year later, in October 2016, Rolls-Royce offered joint production partnership to Turkey with a view to powering planned Turkish platforms and potential sales to third parties. Rolls-Royce\u2019s proposal involved a production unit in Turkey to manufacture engines for the TF-X as well as for helicopters, tanks and missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a rival bid, state-controlled engine maker Tusas Engine Industries, or TEI, submitted Dec. 15 its own offer to the country\u2019s procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, or SSM. TEI is a sister company of Turkish Aerospace Industries, or TAI, the prime local contractor for the TF-X program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turkey\u2019s defense procurement authorities have recently given pace to their work to select an engine know-how supplier that will be the backbone of the TF-X.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/training-sim\/2017\/11\/21\/turkey-chooses-jet-engine-variant-for-indigenous-trainer\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635952984893940046-large-hurkus-duzenlenmis1jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Turkey chooses jet engine variant for indigenous trainer<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">One TAI official said it was unclear if the Hurjet will have a single engine or a twin engine.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SSM officials say they aim at maturing their decision on the TF-X engine early in 2018. In addition to efforts for selecting an immediate engine for the national fighter jet, Turkish authorities hope to develop an indigenous engine in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Industry sources say the engine selection is the most critical phase in the TF-X program. \u201cAll other design work will depend on the engine to be selected,\u201d said one TAI official. \u201cOnce we have decided on the engine, the rest of the program will automatically gain pace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rolls-Royce has been offering its EJ200 engine to power the first Turkish indigenous fighter jet. Terms of production, know-how, technology transfers and export licences are among the main topics being discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EJ200 is a collaborative engine between Rolls-Royce, MTU, Avio and ITP. The consortium established Eurojet Turbo GmbH in the late 1980s. Rolls-Royce says the EJ200 technology makes the engine both smaller and simpler in layout than current engines of a similar thrust class, while giving it lower fuel consumption and an unprecedented power-to-weight ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rolls-Royce has so far delivered more than 1,100 EJ200 engines. It has a thrust range from 13,500 pound-force dry to 20,000 pound-force with reheat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Industry sources say the engine selection is the most critical
