{"id":20501,"date":"2020-05-15T18:53:07","date_gmt":"2020-05-15T18:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/15\/spain-joins-european-patrol-corvette-program-in-which-nations-can-customize-ships\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:50:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:50:47","slug":"spain-joins-european-patrol-corvette-program-in-which-nations-can-customize-ships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2020\/05\/15\/spain-joins-european-patrol-corvette-program-in-which-nations-can-customize-ships\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain joins European Patrol Corvette program in which nations can customize ships"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PARIS \u2014 Spain has officially joined the European Patrol Corvette program to design and develop a prototype of a modular 3,300-ton ship responsible for a number of tasks and missions, including those performed by ocean patrol vessels and light frigates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain announced Feb. 8 that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2020\/02\/07\/spain-seen-joining-greece-france-italy-on-european-patrol-corvette-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">interested in joining<\/a> the EPC program, which was made up of France, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2019\/07\/22\/italy-matches-french-naval-tie-up-with-german-sub-partnership\/\" target=\"_blank\">Italy<\/a> and Greece. Despite the strict lockdown over the COVID-19 pandemic in all four countries, the Spanish shipyard Navantia managed to push its application through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Official confirmation came April 2, according to official sources quoted by Infodefensa.com, a Spanish media outlet covering defense issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objective of the four-nation EPC program is to develop a modular design that each country can personalize to meet its own specific requirements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The suggested configurations of the EPC are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A limited warship optimized for surface warfare and able to counter airborne attacks as well as undertake anti-submarine missions.<\/li><li>A limited warship for lengthy missions (10,000 nautical miles at 14 knots) that can conduct surface warfare missions.<\/li><li>An offshore patrol vessel in various configurations.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EPC project was officially approved in the framework of the European Union\u2019s Permanent Structured Cooperation initiative on Nov. 12, 2019. PESCO is a framework and process to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2020\/02\/21\/europeans-dont-have-a-choice-naval-group-boss-pushes-for-shipyard-consolidation\/\" target=_blank>deepen defense cooperation<\/a> between EU member states \u201cwho are capable and willing to do so,\u201d according to the bloc. Commitments made through PESCO are legally binding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prototype will be the first project undertaken by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2019\/10\/31\/fincantieri-naval-group-dub-their-joint-venture-navaris\/\" target=_blank>Naviris<\/a>, the joint venture launched by France\u2019s Naval Group and Italy\u2019s Fincantieri, which has been operational since Jan. 14, 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EPC is an essential requirement for both the French and Italian navies. The former needs to replace its six Floreal-class ships while the latter must replace four Cassiopea- and Minerva-class vessels as well as four Comandante-class ships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is expected that each country\u2019s shipyards will build their own EPCs, with France building 9-11 vessels and Italy building eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first-in-class would be Italian and operational in 2027, while the first French one would be delivered in 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Portugal
