The government in 2015 decided to model its next-generation weapon on the Medium Extended Air Defense System, designed on the premise of an open-system architecture, easy transportability, and 360-degree sensing and interceptor-launching capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As time nears for the companies to forge a final agreement with the Defence Ministry on the scope and cost of the new project, dubbed TLVS, competitor Raytheon has intensified its campaign for Berlin to simply stick with upgrading the existing hardware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Patriot advocates, Germany runs the risk of building a defense so new that none of its neighbors have it, putting at risk the idea of interoperability in Europe. That is especially the case after some neighbor countries have opted to buy Patriot in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/03\/28\/poland-officially-signs-deal-to-buy-patriot-from-us\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PatriotIsrael.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Poland officially signs deal to buy Patriot from US<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Poland has officially signed a letter of offer and acceptance for Patriot air and missile defense systems after years of negotiations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in the eyes of MBDA Deutschland Managing Director Thomas Gottschild, Germany should stick to the premise of fielding a brand-new system, especially given Berlin\u2019s leadership ambitions in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, a successful fielding of TLVS for Germany would enable the industry team to angle for new customers looking to abandon Patriot equipment in the years ahead, he argued. \u201cBasically, every Patriot customer is a future customer of ours,\u201d he told a small group of reporters at the Berlin Air Show last week. \u201cSo when Patriot systems are getting obsolete, we are there to replace the system components \u2026 with TLVS.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before it can come to that, however, Lockheed and its German partner must first stick the landing, and this year promises to be a make-or-break moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite claims of lower costs and faster fielding from Raytheon and its partner Rheinmetall, ministry officials continue to support their TLVS pick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey don\u2019t have any data, they don\u2019t know the requirements, so they can make any statement they want,\u201d Gottschild said of the competition. \u201cThey don\u2019t have to prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in some ways, the program has left the stage of technical particulars and its success may be tied as much to public perception, namely on price, as it is to the proposition that it represents a generational leap in air defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere will not be any surprises,\u201d said Tim Cahill, a vice president at Lockheed Martin\u2019s Missiles and Fire Control unit, referring to the ongoing talks about costs with government officials in Germany. \u201cThey\u2019ve been in the negotiations for months.
