But this year it plans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/09\/18\/congress-wants-new-plans-from-army-on-its-indirect-fire-protection-suite-development\/\" target=\"_blank\">to experiment with the makeup of an enduring system<\/a> to map the way forward, according to the service\u2019s project manager for cruise missile defense systems with the Program Executive Office Missiles and Space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been efforts to develop certain capabilities within the greater system, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2016\/03\/24\/us-army-fires-stinger-from-multi-mission-launcher-in-test\/\" target=_blank>qualifying interceptors<\/a> and internally developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2016\/04\/07\/us-armys-multi-mission-launcher-defeats-cruise-missile-uas-threat\/\" target=_blank>Multi-Mission Launcher,<\/a> but the Army has decided to take a breath to evaluate its direction, Col. Chuck Worshim told Defense News in a recent interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is shifting around its pots of funding within the IFPC program to pay for two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2018\/08\/08\/army-takes-serious-steps-toward-interim-cruise-missile-protection-capability\/\" target=_blank>Iron Dome systems <\/a>\u2014 manufactured by Israeli company Rafael and American firm Raytheon \u2014 to fill an urgent capability gap for cruise missile defense on an interim basis. Congress mandated the Army deploy two batteries by fiscal 2020 in its fiscal 2019 budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/eurosatory\/2018\/06\/12\/raytheon-and-rafael-seek-ways-for-iron-dome-to-play-in-us-market\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/636033977563914608-missilejpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Raytheon and Rafael seek ways for Iron Dome to play in US market<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Israel&#039;s Rafael and Raytheon are campaigning for Iron Dome to meet the U.S. Army&#039;s cruise missile defense and short-range air defense urgent requirements.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is a new strategy working for the enduring IFPC program and we have some Army decision points along the way, based off of experimentation, that we are planning on doing this summer and into the fall,\u201d Worshim said, \u201cand that is going to help inform that enduring IFPC solution. What you will get is a new program strategy for that enduring IFPC program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From an experimentation perspective, the Army is looking at what are the best components that can be integrated into the IFPC system from sensors to shooters \u2014 essentially \u201cwhat is the optimal mix?\u201d Worshim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose components could be some of the Iron Dome components or they could be American components, whether it be the Sentinel radar and things like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iron Dome uses its Multi-Mission Radar, and the Army is upgrading its Sentinel radar from the A3 version to the A4 version down the road to add capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But at the heart of IFPC will be the Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System \u2014 or IBCS \u2014 which is a command-and-control network into which sensors and shooters can plug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/10\/02\/army-continues-push-for-integrated-sensors-and-shooters-with-latest-ibcs-contract\/\" target=_blank>IBCS is already under development<\/a> for the Army\u2019s future Integrated Air and Missile Defense system that will replace the Patriot air and missile defense system. The service is also in the process of choosing the right sensors and shooters for the new air and missile defense system.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/03\/02\/growing-mission-for-future-army-battle-command-system-accounts-for-delays\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PatriotKadena.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Growing mission for future Army battle command system accounts for delays<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army&#039;s Integrated Battle Command System&#039;s mission is growing, and it&#039;s unlikely the service will be able to shore up a now four-year initial operational capability schedule delay.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IBCS will allow sensors and shooters to easily be plugged in or swapped out down the road, but it\u2019s still in the development and testing phase. It\u2019s expected to reach initial operational capability in FY22, which is roughly a four-year delay from its original schedule, but accounts for the added IFPC mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through experimentation, the fate of some efforts within the program will be determined. The Army has spent years developing its Multi-Mission Launcher, but could end up choosing something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Multi-Mission Launcher \u201ccould be a component,\u201d Worshim said, \u201cbut it could also be the missile fire unit from Iron Dome \u2026 but it could also be a yet-to-be-determined-or-defined launcher that is developed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is continuing with its effort to qualify future interceptors for the IFPC program. \u201cWe are still looking at potential candidates, and it\u2019s actually going through a tech verification phase right now,\u201d Worshim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service awarded three $2.6 million contracts in the first phase of the Expanded Mission Area Missile program that aims to qualify a second interceptor for IFPC, having already chosen one interceptor \u2014 the AIM-9X Sidewinder missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/eurosatory\/2018\/06\/21\/one-of-these-3-missiles-could-be-the-armys-next-interceptor-to-protect-against-indirect-fires\/\" Lockheed&#039;s Mini Hit-to-Kill munitions and Raytheon&#039;s AI3 interceptor as a second interceptor for its Indirect Fire Protection Capability Increment 2 capability to defeat rockets, artillery, mortars, drones and cruise missiles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed Martin will develop its Miniature Hit-to-Kill missile, and Raytheon will work to qualify SkyHunter \u2014 otherwise known as Iron Dome\u2019s Tamir missile \u2014 and an interceptor based on the Accelerated Improved Interceptor Initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the experimentation will take place at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, through lab-based work combined with predictive analysis, Worshim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have a very limited time to do this experimentation, to come back and \u2026 inform Army senior leaders and make a recommendation of what that optimal mix looks
