{"id":20843,"date":"2015-04-29T22:04:01","date_gmt":"2015-04-29T22:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2015\/04\/29\/bulgaria-may-withdraw-mig-29s-from-service\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:50:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:50:46","slug":"bulgaria-may-withdraw-mig-29s-from-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2015\/04\/29\/bulgaria-may-withdraw-mig-29s-from-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Bulgaria May Withdraw MiG-29s From Service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WARSAW \u2014 Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolay Nenchev has announced the Air Force likely will pull its 12 MiG-29 fighter jets out of service rather than proceed with what he called an &#8220;overpriced&#8221; maintenance and repair deal with Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nenchev told local daily Sega that signing an extended deal, until 2019, priced by the Russian side at some 80 million leva (US $46 million), would be <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">to <\/span>unfavorable to Bulgaria, and so <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">as a result, <\/span>he refused to sign the contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed cost <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">offered amount <\/span>was triple <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">three times higher than <\/span>the actual value of such a contract, according to the minister. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aircraft are currently serviced by Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG. That <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Bulgaria&#8217;s current <\/span>deal <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">for maintenance and repair services <\/span>is scheduled to expire in September. <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">2015. <\/span>The minister said that he has considered <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">been considering to <\/span>following the process used by the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> in the step of the <\/span>three Baltic states, which <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">which do not own fighter jets, but instead <\/span>cover the costs of NATO air policing missions over their territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">considered <\/span>options include the purchase of new fighter jets for the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Bulgarian <\/span>Air Force, he said. This January, Nenchev said he would discuss a potential procurement with the US government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">country&#8217;s <\/span>Defense Ministry has shortlisted three offers to acquire new combat aircraft, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">for its military, <\/span>which include a US bid of F-16s, which were withdrawn from service, the Eurofighter Typhoon, and Sweden&#8217;s Gripen, local media reported in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Bulgaria joined NATO in March 2004, Sofia vowed to replace six of its MiG-21 aircraft and acquire
