{"id":20914,"date":"2021-02-17T17:03:29","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T17:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/02\/17\/swedish-defense-leaders-push-saabs-gripen-offer-for-finland\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T14:01:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T14:01:59","slug":"swedish-defense-leaders-push-saabs-gripen-offer-for-finland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2021\/02\/17\/swedish-defense-leaders-push-saabs-gripen-offer-for-finland\/","title":{"rendered":"Swedish defense leaders push Saab\u2019s Gripen offer for Finland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COLOGNE, Germany \u2014 Top Swedish defense officials have thrown their weight behind Saab\u2019s bid for the multibillion-dollar HX fighter competition in Finland, arguing the Gripen aircraft would enable unprecedented cooperation between the two countries in thwarting a hypothetical attack by Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Finnish race is one of two big-ticket aircraft competitions in Europe \u2014 Switzerland being the other \u2014 where major vendors from both sides of the Atlantic are jockeying for position. Finland has requested final offers by the end of April from Airbus for the Eurofighter; Dassault for the Rafale; Boeing for the Super Hornet; Lockheed Martin for the F-35; and Saab for the Gripen E\/F.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helsinki has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2020\/08\/18\/finlands-12-billion-fighter-plan-dodges-the-post-pandemic-budget-axe\/\">budgeted roughly $12 billion<\/a> for the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist said the aircraft competition comes during a \u201cdeteriorating security situation\u201d around the Baltic Sea, which he blamed on Russian military flexing. He framed greater defense cooperation among the Scandinavian countries as a prerequisite for standing up to Moscow\u2019s \u201caggressive moves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAir defense is a vital part of this,\u201d Hultqvist said during an online press conference on Feb. 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brig. Gen. Anders Persson, the Swedish deputy chief of the Air Force, zeroed in on Sweden and Finland as potential points of incursion for Russian forces. Adversarial airplanes could enter their airspace in large numbers, benefitting from the countries\u2019 long northeast orientation, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In such a case, the more exposed Finnish air fleet could fall back west on bases in neighboring Sweden, a feat that would be more easily accomplished if both countries had the Gripen, Persson argued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be like one air force with two commanders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saab CEO Micael Johansson dangled the prospect of enhanced industrial cooperation with Finnish companies, especially because the customer would get a role in developing new features on the Gripen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis aircraft has an architecture that makes it upgradeable in a very short time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johansson also praised the capabilities of another aircraft: the GlobalEye early-warning and spy plane, which Saab is offering to Finland for the country\u2019s military modernization program. The aircraft\u2019s sensors would essentially nullify stealth features of attacking aircraft, he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warplane makers have been pulling out all the stops, often with help from their respective governments, to advertise their aircraft in the Finnish and Swiss competitions. Saab\u2019s Gripen offer was eliminated from the Swiss race in 2019 because the \u201cE\u201d version of the plane wasn\u2019t fully ready for the Swiss government\u2019s flight demonstration regime at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Saab is still banking on international expansion led by a sale of the Gripen to Brazil, Johansson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norway, the westernmost neighbor on the Scandinavian peninsula, is upgrading its Air Force with F-35s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five vendors
