{"id":20979,"date":"2016-08-25T14:24:37","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T14:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2016\/08\/25\/korea-f-35a-program-coming-together\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:51:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:51:32","slug":"korea-f-35a-program-coming-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2016\/08\/25\/korea-f-35a-program-coming-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Korea F-35A Program Coming Together"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>TAIPEI, Taiwan \u2013 Lockheed Martin has been awarded a $7 million contract for providing the <span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1472118806001_6411\">multispectral database for the upcoming delivery to South Korea of <\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1472118806001_6412\">40 F-35A Lightning\u00a0II stealth fighters with conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) capability.<\/span><br\/><br\/>The contract was awarded Aug. 23 by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) under the Foreign Military Sales program. The<span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1472118806001_6413\">\u00a0US Naval Air Systems Command in Maryland will handle the contract.<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1472118806001_6419\">The 40 F-35A CTOL fighters were released to South Korea in March 2013 for $7.06 billion. Then in May, the DSCA released $793 million of arms in support of the F-35, including 274 AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, <\/span><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1472118806001_6420\">530 Joint Directed Attack Munitions (JDAM), 154 AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and 530 &#8220;Bunker Buster&#8221; BLU-109 2000LB Penetrators equipped with JDAM.<\/span><br\/><br\/> <span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1472118806001_6426\">The DSCA originally released 60 CTOL fighters for $10.8 billion, but South Korea reduced the number to 40 for budgetary reasons. The fifth-generation F-35A beat the fourth-generation Boeing F-15 Silent Eagle and the EADS Eurofighter Typhoon for South Korea\u2019s F-X fighter competition.<\/span><br\/><br\/>South Korea joined Israel and Japan, who selected the F-35A in 2010 and 2011, respectively.<br\/><br\/> <span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1472118806001_6433\">Lockheed will begin deliveries of the F-35A in the 2018-2021 time frame.\u00a0<\/span><u5:p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1472118806001_6435\"><\/u5:p><br\/><br\/> <span
