size=\"2\">ROME\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Italy&#8217;s Leonardo-Finmeccanica will complete a slowly undertaken name\u00a0change on Jan. 1 by switching to just Leonardo.<br\/><br\/>The Italian state-controlled group, originally named Finmeccanica, announced in March it would rename itself Leonardo, but decided to call\u00a0itself Leonardo-Finmeccanica until the end of 2016 to give the market,\u00a0 particularly export customers, time to get used to the new name.<br\/><br\/>Following a big billboard advertising campaign across Italy in the\u00a0holiday season, the firm will now switch to Leonardo on the first day of\u00a02017.<br\/><br\/>The new name is inspired by the 15th century artist and engineer\u00a0Leonardo da Vinci, who painted the &#8220;Mona Lisa,&#8221; but also made plans for a\u00a0prototype helicopter and siege machines.<br\/><br\/>CEO Mauro Moretti ordered the name change to coincide with\u00a0Finmeccanica&#8217;s switch from a holding company overseeing units including\u00a0AgustaWestland and Alenia Aeronautica to a single company in which the\u00a0nits have been turned into divisions, promoting synergies and a unified\u00a0company strategy.<br\/><br\/>The prefix &#8220;Fin-&#8221; in Finmeccanica was used by Italian governments to\u00a0denote state controlled financial companies.<br\/><br\/>&#8220;Finmeccanica is an obsolete name, we will truly change it,&#8221; Moretti\u00a0said earlier this year.<br\/><br\/>Leonardo ended the year with a rare acquisition, taking full control of\u00a0Sistemi Dinamici S.p.A, a Pisa, Italy-based unmanned flight specialist\u00a0launched in 2006, which is developing the unmanned lightweight helicopter\u00a0SD-150 Hero program.<br\/><br\/>On Dec. 30, the company also announced that the prototype of its new\u00a0M-345 jet trainer had made its first 30-minute flight in Italy.<br\/><br\/>The aircraft&#8217;s development has been funded by the Italian government, and\u00a0it is set to be acquired by the Italian Air Force to prepare trainee\u00a0pilots to move up to the firm&#8217;s advanced M-346 trainer, which is already\u00a0in service in Italy and is now being offered to the US in the T-X program.<br\/><br\/><\/span> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div> <\/div><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The M-345 is based on the firm\u2019s planned, but never produced M-311\u00a0trainer, albeit with new engines, avionics and some structural\u00a0aerodynamic changes, and it will replace the MB-339.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company said the test-flight program would be completed during 2017.\u00a0&#8220;The next tests will check the advanced avionics systems, the engine and\u00a0the flight envelope expansion, including altitude, speed and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">manoeuvrability,&#8221; the firm said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><div class=\"_qc_F ms-bg-color-white _qc_G\"> <div
