Boeing\u2019s bid was considered a long shot by defense analysts, as the Air Force had initially considered sole-sourcing Lockheed\u2019s UH-60 Black Hawk and SNC put forward a recapitalized version of used Army UH-60s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As such, a protest by Lockheed was heavily anticipated, especially as the company previously filed an unsucccessful bid protest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/05\/30\/another-air-force-aircraft-contract-just-got-delayed-here-are-the-details\/\" target=_blank>over the Huey replacement program\u2019s data rights requirements<\/a>. We look forward to working with the Air Force on future procurements and remain committed to delivering superior helicopters on our existing and future contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2018\/09\/26\/despite-kc-46-problems-air-force-optimistic-about-boeings-huey-replacement\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MH-139-5.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Despite KC-46 problems, US Air Force optimistic about Boeing\u2019s Huey replacement<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson doesn&#039;t believe the Huey replacement is &quot;a complicated procurement.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SNC also acknowledged on Tuesday that it would not protest the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we are disappointed by the recent UH-1N announcement, Sierra Nevada Corporation will not protest the decision,&#8221; the company said in a statement. &#8220;We are confident that our innovative Sierra Force helicopter provides an affordable and high-performance solution and we remain committed to offering this advanced, disruptive technology in both domestic and international rotary-wing markets.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Huey replacement contract\u2019s final contract value \u2014 about $1.7 billion less than the Air Force\u2019s $4.1 billion projected value \u2014 hints that Boeing had bid aggressively low on a fixed-price award under which the company assumes the risk for cost overruns. That may be one reason why Lockheed and SNC decided to forgo a bid protest this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boeing has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2018\/09\/28\/boeings-big-month-capped-off-with-hat-trick-of-new-contracts\/\" target=\"_blank\">won three hotly anticipated aircraft contracts<\/a> in the past few weeks: the Huey replacement, the Navy\u2019s MQ-25 tanker drone and the Air Force\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2018\/09\/27\/reuters-air-force-awards-9b-contract-to-boeing-for-next-training-jet\/\" target=\"_blank\">T-X trainer jet<\/a>. Two of those awards, the MQ-25 and Huey, seem to have been accepted without the losing contractors disputing the award through the Government Accountability Office \u2014 a sharp contrast to the status quo of several years prior, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2016\/10\/25\/game-over-gao-protest-reveals-cost-was-deciding-factor-in-b-21-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\">bid protests were the expected response<\/a> to every lost competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acquisition officials complained then that the ensuing legal fights wasted time and money, with Congress going as far as to propose financial penalties for companies that launched undue protests. Lawmakers eventually decided against that idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force plans to buy 84 new helicopters over the course of the program, with the first aircraft being
