{"id":21097,"date":"2016-01-08T16:49:10","date_gmt":"2016-01-08T16:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2016\/01\/08\/france-orders-6-nh90s-for-barkhane-operation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:55:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:55:09","slug":"france-orders-6-nh90s-for-barkhane-operation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/training-sim\/2016\/01\/08\/france-orders-6-nh90s-for-barkhane-operation\/","title":{"rendered":"France Orders 6 NH90s for Barkhane Operation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>PARIS \u2014\u00a0France has ordered <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Dec. 30 from NH Industries <\/span>a further six NH90 transport helicopters from NH Industries\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">for the Army, <\/span>following a request from the Army Air Corps to boost <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">for boosting <\/span>the Barkhane mission in sub-Saharan Africa, the procurement office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Direction G\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l&#8217;Armement signed an order Dec. 30 2015 for six NH90 tactical transport helicopters NH90 TTH Ca\u00efman from manufacturer NHI,&#8221;\u00a0the DGA said in a Jan. 7 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This strengthens significantly the Army&#8217;s equipment and brings to 74 the number of NH90 TTH ordered, of which 44 will be delivered by 2019.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A DGA spokesman declined to give a value for\u00a0the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unit price of the Army version of the NH90 was \u20ac28.6 million euros (US $31 million), a French Senate report said in November 2012, based on the previous French order of 68 NH90s for the land force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This additional order for six NH90s, to be delivered in 2017-2019, confirms the essential role that new-generation multirole helicopters play in modern operations,&#8221;\u00a0Guillaume Faury, chairman of Airbus Helicopters, said in a Jan. 7 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A planned order for the six helicopters was announced in September as part of the 2016 defense budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Army Gen. Olivier Gourlez de la Motte, chief of the Army Air Corps, <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">in January last year <\/span>told journalists last January that the service sought to add a further 10 helicopters to strengthen the helicopter force in the Barkhane operation. Those aircraft would be a mix of attack and transport helicopters, reinforcing about\u00a0a dozen helicopters in the Gao military base in Mali\u00a0and between eight and 10 for the special forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The troops in the Barkhane mission are deployed across five African partner nations, requiring transport across great distance in the Sahel region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2025, the NH90 will <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">by 2025 <\/span>form the main helicopter for the services, with the target of 115 tactical helicopters set by the 2013 <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">2103 <\/span>defense and security white paper, the DGA said. An upgraded Cougar and the Caracal will also form part of the helicopter fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France has ordered for the Navy 27 NH90s in the NATO\u00a0Frigate Helicopter version, of which 15 have been delivered. The Army has received 17 so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airbus holds 32.5 percent of NHI, AgustaWestland 32 percent and Fokker 5.5 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
