For those looking for more information, expect to have to wait until the first part of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a recent interview with Defense News during his visit to Washington, Gen. Gordon Messenger, vice chief of the U.K. Defence Staff, said a study on the plan for the littoral strike groups will be out roughly \u201ca year from now.\u201d He added that questions about funding will \u201ccertainly\u201d be part of the broader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2018\/12\/18\/britain-eyes-a-more-lethal-force-in-newly-revealed-defense-modernization-review\/\" target=_blank>U.K. spending review<\/a> expected later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/interviews\/2019\/04\/22\/vice-chief-of-uk-defence-staff-talks-brexit-budget-and-littoral-ships\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Gordon_Messenger.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Vice chief of UK Defence Staff talks Brexit, budget and littoral ships<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&quot;Frankly, we have to consider worst-case and plan accordingly, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re doing,&quot; says Gen. Gordon Messenger.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the moment, the money has been found to examine the concept and develop the concept, and I think until we have the information that that phase will bring, it\u2019s very difficult to put a timeline or a sort of hard figure against it,\u201d Messenger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cClearly that\u2019s going to need to be weighed up against other priorities. But it\u2019s a way of us understanding more about it. It\u2019s a capability that is attractive, it\u2019s a capability that we think will have relevance in the future, but until we really understand more about it, it\u2019s difficult to weigh up against other priorities,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operational plans that come out of that study will determine if new support ships are needed for the strike groups, but Messenger noted that the U.K. is already investing in new support ships, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2017\/01\/17\/a-year-late-uk-receives-first-carrier-support-ship\/\" target=_blank>South Korean-made Tide-class tanker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re investing quite a lot in support ships and then trying to work out what the best [concept of operations] is, given that we\u2019re never going to have everything that we want because we\u2019re simply not a nation of that sort of size,\u201d Messenger said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last point is notable, as some politicians in the U.K., including Williamson, have said Britain\u2019s divorce from the European Union will allow the country to take on a more global military role.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2019\/04\/10\/the-uk-wants-its-bombs-to-live-longer-and-it-thinks-data-can-help\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Eurofighter_UK.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The UK wants its bombs to live longer, and it thinks data can help<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Can big data make a bomb live longer? The U.K. wants to find out.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked whether the U.K. has a fleet large enough to fill that goal, Messenger said the kingdom is updating several of its fleets and adding Type 26 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/12\/10\/here-are-the-royal-navys-top-3-contenders-for-their-new-budget-frigate\/\" target=_blank>Type 31<\/a> frigates. And he indicated some outside-the-box-thinking may be involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The military must \u201cget that balance right between war fighting at the very highest end, and the sort of ubiquity that comes from platforms in, let\u2019s call it the constabulary role,\u201d he said. \u201cThen you don\u2019t have to just think warships. We get a lot of utility out of our amphibious shipping. We have offshore patrol vessels, which are [such] capable platforms that we\u2019re just buying new ones. So you don\u2019t have to be out-and-out warships.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As another example, Messenger cited the Tide class, noting it has a \u201creally capable hanger on the back,\u201d as well as medical facilities and space to carry other equipment. \u201cIts principal task will always be to carry fuel for warships, but nonetheless the utility you can get from that fleet is considerable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, you know, could we do with more? Yes, but do I feel that we\u2019re about appropriately configured for what we want to do? Probably. And the fact that we\u2019ve been able to have an LPD \u2014 an amphibious ship \u2014 and three frigates go to the Far East in the last year and a half is an indication of our ability to veer and
