(Photo courtesy of Rolls-Royce)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Rolls-Royce has been quietly developing an integral system required to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2018\/08\/01\/3-reasons-why-the-time-is-now-for-directed-energy\/\" target=_blank>operate laser weapons on the battlefield <\/a>for about a decade in its LibertyWorks division, which is the company\u2019s internal advanced technology unit based in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the company is ready to go public on the technology it has internally funded, having taken it through extensive testing, Mark Wilson, LibertyWorks\u2019 chief operating officer, told Defense News in a May 9 interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That technology is an integrated power and thermal management system capable of powering a 100-kilowatt-class laser weapon, according to Wilson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system uses the company\u2019s well-known M250 helicopter engine \u2014 that was used in the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter and is also found in the Little Bird and the AH-6i helicopters \u2014 which allows the system to generate roughly 300 kilowatts of electrical power and 200 kilowatts of thermal management capacity, Wilson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the system is also considered hybrid as it combines a battery with the engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rolls-Royce is \u201ca power and propulsion company and so about 10 years ago, we started thinking more about electrification. You can see it in today\u2019s hybrid cars, hybrid trains, same thing in marine applications,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe saw this capability of using a turbine engine and a battery combined to operate propulsion systems was potentially coming,\u201d Wilson said, \u201cso we started looking at electrification and then said, \u2018Oh, there are also some unique opportunities when you look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/space-missile-defense\/2016\/08\/24\/dod-presses-on-in-pursuit-of-laser-weapons\/\" target=_blank>what a directed-energy system <\/a>needs. It needs a lot of power, it needs to be power dense and needs thermal technology as well and we are good at those types of capabilities.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engine \u201callows us to have continuous operations as long as you have fuel available,\u201d which leads to an endless magazine of laser shots, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battery allows \u201cinstantaneous power, so you don\u2019t have to have the engine running all the time,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cYou can start running on the battery and then switch over to the turbine engine once it\u2019s up to speed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the engine, when it\u2019s running, can recharge the battery, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2017\/03\/16\/us-army-gets-world-record-setting-60-kw-laser\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/lockheed-60kw-laser-truck.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army gets world record-setting 60-kW laser<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Army is taking delivery of a 60 kilowatt-class laser from Lockheed Martin as the company wraps up demonstrations of the capability.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system is designed to fit inside the same vehicle as the laser weapon itself. Up until now, demonstrations of laser systems have focused on scaling and building up the technology of the weapon itself and so the services have used commercial off-the-shelf diesel generators and cooling systems that require a separate trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur idea here is we want to package it in a size that can fit along with the laser system onto a vehicle, a type of a truck or eventually a ship or even eventually airborne, so the focus of our research is on developing that kind of capability that can go on an actual platform,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2017\/06\/26\/us-army-tests-laser-on-apache-helicopter\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/apache-laser.jpg.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Army tests laser on Apache helicopter<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. Army and Raytheon have completed a flight test of a high-energy laser system on an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter that was deemed successful, according to a Raytheon statement.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To date, Rolls-Royce has done \u201cquite a bit of work\u201d in terms of designing, testing and modeling the system. The company plans to go through another round of testing beginning soon and lasting through the end of May and possibly into June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That testing is in preparation for sending the system down to be field-tested this year with Lockheed Martin\u2019s laser weapon system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2018\/08\/07\/lockheed-dynetics-team-and-raytheon-locked-in-battle-to-build-100-kilowatt-laser-for-us-army\/\" target=_blank>Lockheed Martin, partnered with Dynetics, is competing<\/a> \u2014 head-to-head with Raytheon \u2014 to build a powerful 100-kilowatt laser for the U.S. Army, which pushes the envelope on directed-energy capability development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The winner of the competition will integrate its laser system onto the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is the size of truck that Rolls-Royce has its eye on for fitting its own power and thermal system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the company believes its technology is scaleable when it comes to powering different laser weapons and when it comes to the platform on which a laser weapon might find itself, Wilson said. That could be an Army vehicle, a naval vessel or a medium transport airlifter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army, for instance, is testing laser weapons on a Stryker combat vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur goal is to develop technology for continuous operation,\u201d Wilson said, but, \u201cif the customer doesn\u2019t need that and packaging is more important, we\u2019ve got the tools now to be able to translate to other applications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is for the services to see the utility of such a system because it will allow \u201ccustomers to move past current low-power, low duty-cycle demonstrations by solving many of the difficult issues integrating high-power output with matching levels of thermal
