{"id":22093,"date":"2017-12-21T15:02:43","date_gmt":"2017-12-21T15:02:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2017\/12\/21\/defense-nominee-withdraws-from-consideration-over-gun-control-comments\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:54:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:54:15","slug":"defense-nominee-withdraws-from-consideration-over-gun-control-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2017\/12\/21\/defense-nominee-withdraws-from-consideration-over-gun-control-comments\/","title":{"rendered":"Defense nominee withdraws from consideration over gun control comments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 A Defense Department nominee whose confirmation was put on hold over comments he made about gun control announced in a op-ed on Wednesday that he has withdrawn from consideration for the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dean Winslow, a retired Air Force colonel and flight surgeon who was being considered as an assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/i-spoke-my-mind-on-guns-it-torpedoed-my-appointment-in-the-trump-administration\/2017\/12\/20\/8f708f6c-e50d-11e7-833f-155031558ff4_story.html?utm_term=.4b59bd36eb81\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">in a piece on the Washington Post website<\/a> that the growing political fight over his confirmation remarks have made him too much of a distraction to effectively help the department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have the credentials to help, including 35 years of experience in the Air Force in military and academic medicine \u2026\u201d he wrote. \u201cBut unfortunately, I do not possess one credential the committee wanted to see: I do not support the unrestricted ownership of semiautomatic assault weapons by civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In November, during a confirmation hearing just days after 46 people were killed by a gunman in a Texas Church, Winslow turned a question about domestic violence cases in the military into personal comments about gun control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d also like to say, and I may get in trouble with other members of the committee, how insane it is that in the United States of America a civilian can go out and buy a semiautomatic assault rifle like an AR-15,\u201d he told lawmakers. \u201cI think that\u2019s an issue, not so much for this committee, but elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comments drew a quick rebuke from committee Chairman Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who said the issue was outside \u201cyour area of responsibility or expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his op-ed, Winslow (who served four deployments to Iraq and two to Afghanistan) said he has no opposition to civilian-owned firearms but said high-powered assault rifles are unsuitable for untrained civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs commander of an Air Force hospital in Baghdad during the surge, I have seen what these weapons do to human beings,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe injuries are devastating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also argued that the weapons are a poor choice for hunting or self-defense, saying other firearms allow for better control and fewer accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAssault weapons in the United States are not being used to kill \u2018bad guys\u2019 in self-defense or to provide for a \u2018well-regulated militia\u2019 but for entertainment, mass murder and domestic terrorism,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIs this really the intent of the Second Amendment?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winslow was originally nominated by President Donald Trump for the health post in October. He most recently worked as the vice chair of medicine at Stanford University, and spent 15 years in pharmaceuticals and biotech industry, helping to develop antiretroviral drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the gun comments, his nomination was stalled in the Senate Armed Services Committee shortly after the November hearing, even as other nominees were advanced to a
