{"id":22099,"date":"2018-06-11T03:00:12","date_gmt":"2018-06-11T03:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/11\/this-week-in-congress-aviation-accidents-under-scrutiny\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:13:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:13:26","slug":"this-week-in-congress-aviation-accidents-under-scrutiny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2018\/06\/11\/this-week-in-congress-aviation-accidents-under-scrutiny\/","title":{"rendered":"This week in Congress: Aviation accidents under scrutiny"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 House Armed Services Committee officials will hold a hearing this week to probe into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/08\/the-death-toll-for-rising-aviation-accidents-133-troops-killed-in-five-years\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">recent spike of military aviation accidents<\/a>, a problem that defense officials have acknowledged but downplayed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/05\/06\/as-fatal-aviation-crashes-reach-6-year-high-pentagon-says-this-is-not-a-crisis\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cnot a crisis.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wednesday morning hearing will feature safety officials from each of the services and comes after a Military Times investigation earlier this year that found fatal military aviation accidents have reached <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/05\/06\/as-fatal-aviation-crashes-reach-6-year-high-pentagon-says-this-is-not-a-crisis\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">a six-year high<\/a>, in both the number of accidents and the number of personnel killed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, has said that he believes budget cuts in recent years have played a major role in the readiness issue, but also pledged to delve further into the issue with a public hearing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes as the Senate conducts floor debate on the annual defense authorization bill. House lawmakers included a new review of the aviation problems in their draft of the legislation, and have promised more oversight on the issue in months to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<strong>Tuesday, June \u2014 Rayburn 2212 <br>\n<i>Aviation mishaps <\/i><br>\nService safety officials will testify before the committee on ongoing issues with military aviation mishaps. <br>\n<br>\nSenate Homeland Security \u2014 10 a.m. \u2014 Dirksen 342 <br>\n<i>Pending legislation<\/i><br>\nThe committee will consider a series of pending bills, including the \u201cpreventing emerging threats\u201d act. <br>\n<br>\nHouse Foreign Affairs \u2014 10 a.m. \u2014 Rayburn 2172 <br>\n<i>Middle East and North Africa<\/i><br>\nThe committee will hear from State Department officials on national security
