Duncan Hunter<\/a> won\u2019t face trial on fraud and corruption charges until after the midterm elections, a federal judge ruled on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunter, one of the most prominent combat veterans in Congress, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/08\/21\/duncan-hunter-gop-lawmaker-and-marine-vet-indicted-on-corruption-charges\/\" target=_blank>was indicted in August<\/a> on charges he and his wife stole more than $250,000 in campaign funds to pay for overseas vacations, bar tabs, dental work and other personal purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five-term Republican lawmaker has denied the charges, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/08\/24\/congressman-accused-of-abusing-campaign-funds-denies-any-wrongdoing\/\" target=\"_blank\">labeling them a political attack<\/a> designed to hurt his re-election chances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A federal judge could have set his trial date for as early as Nov. 1, but Hunter\u2019s attorney\u2019s requested additional time to respond to the allegations and federal prosecutors\u2019 evidence. The couple is now scheduled to appear back in court on Dec. 3, about four weeks after the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/08\/22\/charges-against-duncan-hunter-detail-family-vacations-football-tickets-other-luxury-items-with-illegal-funds\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1811315.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Charges against Duncan Hunter detail family vacations, football tickets, other luxury items with illegal funds<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Marine Corps veteran turned Republican lawmaker faces more than 20 years in jail on federal corruption charges.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/public-safety\/sd-me-hunter-hearing-20180924-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">The San Diego Union-Tribune<\/a> reported that Hunter and his wife, Margaret, arrived separately at the hearing and were greeted by protesters outside the courthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunter, who joined the Marine Corps after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, has portrayed himself on Capitol Hill as a proud veteran and a defender of the best interests of military personnel. He served as an artillery officer in Iraq (twice) and Afghanistan, and served simultaneously in Congress and the Marine Corps Reserve until last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was an outspoken member of the House Armed Services Committee until last month, when the indictment forced him to step down from his committee assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the federal indictment paints Hunter as an opportunist who turned to campaign donations to cover a host of personal debts and maintain a lavish lifestyle. Illegal expenses include more than $6,100 spent on private school tuition payments, $3,100 on home cable bills, $5,900 on trips to Pittsburgh Steelers games and $6,500 on a family vacation to Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The charges also include several problematic purchases related to the military. In one case, prosecutors allege, Hunter joked that he would list a pair of shorts he bought for vacation as \u201c(golf) balls for wounded warriors\u201d in official campaign records, to justify the expense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On another occasion, he listed a $14,000 family trip to Italy as a \u201cmostly military\/defense meet related\u201d event even though he never set up a tour of U.S. naval facilities there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with San Diego\u2019s ABC 10 in August, Hunter called the charges a political attack by federal agencies that are still working on behalf of Democratic Party interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not worried. I\u2019m looking forward to it,\u201d he told the news station. \u201cThey can try to have a political agenda as our law enforcement, as a U.S. government \u2026 Let them expose themselves for what they are: a politically motivated group of folks. So let\u2019s go to trial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the controversy, the Cook Political Report still lists Hunter\u2019s congressional district as \u201cleans Republican\u201d and gives him an election advantage over his Democratic opponent, Ammar Campa-Najjar, a former official within President Barack Obama\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The congressional seat has been held by Hunter and his father, a 14-term congressman who served as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, since
