{"id":22638,"date":"2020-07-14T21:42:57","date_gmt":"2020-07-14T21:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/07\/14\/space-force-squadron-gets-new-advanced-terminal-for-secure-communications\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:58:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:58:19","slug":"space-force-squadron-gets-new-advanced-terminal-for-secure-communications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/space\/2020\/07\/14\/space-force-squadron-gets-new-advanced-terminal-for-secure-communications\/","title":{"rendered":"Space Force squadron gets new advanced terminal for secure communications"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Space Force squadron charged with operating the military\u2019s most secure communications satellites has received a new advanced terminal that has been in development for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Family of Advanced Beyond-Line-of-Sight Terminal (FAB-T) was installed in late June at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, where the 4th Space Operations Squadron will use it to control protected military communications satellites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe terminals we were using before couldn\u2019t control some of the more advanced functions on our systems,\u201d  Staff Sgt. Edgar Diamond, an officer within the 4th SOPS, said in a press release. \u201cOur old system was not user friendly in the least. If you clicked the wrong thing it would log you off the system. It was a pain and couldn\u2019t be maintained by Airmen. The FAB-T is more efficient and is going to be entirely Airman maintained.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FAB-T will be used for satellite telemetry, tracking and commanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/c2-comms\/satellites\/2019\/05\/10\/air-force-gains-increased-capacity-with-new-anti-jamming-satellite\/\" target=_blank>the Advanced Extremely High Frequency constellation<\/a>, which replaces the MILSTAR constellation in providing protected, anti-jamming communication for high-priority military assets and missions. AEHF satellites and FAB-T terminals are designed to provide survivable, strategic nuclear and non-nuclear command and control, among other things. Just one AEHF satellite has three times the capacity of the entire MILSTAR constellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/c2-comms\/2015\/11\/09\/raytheon-approved-for-satellite-terminal-production\/\" target=_blank>Built by Raytheon<\/a>, the FAB-T program is significantly behind its initial schedule due in part to software deficiencies. A 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/700\/698933.pdf\" target=_blank>Government Accountability Office report<\/a> warned that as \u201cFAB-T delays mount, the first launched AEHF satellite might near the end of its projected 14-year operational lifespan by the time FAB-T is available.\u201d The first AEHF satellite launched in 2010. The sixth and final <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2020\/03\/27\/last-of-the-aehf-satellites-lifts-off-from-florida\/\" target=_blank>AEHF satellite was launched in March<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other parts of the system are still in development, such as the Forced Element Terminals that will extend these communication capabilities to the B-52 and RC-135. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/c2-comms\/2020\/01\/21\/with-this-upgrade-these-aircraft-will-have-anti-jamming-comms\/\" target=_blank>Raytheon was awarded a $442 million contract in January<\/a> to build those terminals. Work on that contract is expected to be completed in August 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dote.osd.mil\/Portals\/97\/pub\/reports\/FY2019\/af\/2019fab-t.pdf?ver=2020-01-30-115238-347\" target=_blank>Air Force report on FAB-T<\/a> released earlier this year noted that U.S. Strategic Command obtained early operation use of FAB-T in June 2019, and the Air Force plans to begin installing them at operational sites in fiscal 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The June installation marks the first FAB-T for the 4th SOPS and the unit plans to install more FAB-T terminals in the future. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schriever.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/2270874\/4th-sops-installs-new-satellite-terminal\/\" target=_blank>The 50th Space Wing <\/a>leaders also emphasized the new system is far simpler to use and easier to maintain than its predecessor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo log onto a satellite with our old system was like a 20-page checklist,\u201d said Diamond. \u201cIt took 30-45 minutes just to get online. With the FAB-T, it\u2019s a half-page checklist and [you can be] online in maybe 10-15 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe FAB-T is smaller, faster and easier to repair than what we were previously using,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019ll significantly cut down on down time involved with maintenance. With the FAB-T, it takes only 30 minutes to repair, whereas our old system took all day.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new Advanced Family of Beyond-Line-of-Sight
