The prototype could significantly reduce the terrestrial footprint needed to leverage the Defense Department\u2019s growing portfolio of space-based systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Aug. 31, Lockheed Martin and Ball Aerospace announced they successfully completed a phased array transmit test for the MBMM antenna, a technology milestone on the path to a full end-to-end satellite communication demonstration. A successful receive test took place in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are excited to partner with the Space Force on this phased array technology demonstration. This is a collaborative team with proven leadership in fielding large-scale L- and S-band communication phased arrays,\u201d said Maria Demaree, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Mission Solutions. \u201cOur experience integrating antennas into C2 systems is unparalleled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBall Aerospace has targeted investment in the core phased array technologies required to allow MBMM to address the Space Force\u2019s mission needs while providing an affordable full system solution,\u201d said Jake Sauer, vice president and general manager of tactical solutions at Ball Aerospace. \u201cWith the successful completion of the transmit test, we are looking forward to the full end-to-end mission demonstration of the phased array capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon\u2019s Silicon Valley hub, Defense Innovation Unit,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/c2-comms\/2019\/07\/30\/a-new-satellite-antenna-could-save-the-air-force-time-and-money\/\" target=_blank> awarded a $7.2 million contract to Lockheed Martin, Ball Aerospace and Kratos Technologies<\/a> for the prototype in April 2019. At the same time, Harris Corporation \u2014 now L3Harris Technologies \u2014 was awarded a $6.3 million contract to build its own prototype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If successful, MBMM will be incorporated into the Air Force Satellite Control Network, the system used to operate and maintain Defense Department satellites.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
